For someone for whom english is not his native language it is not easy to read. Yet it contains three classical masterpieces of philosophical stature. It is helpful to know that it can be read as a sceptical comment on the proposition made by various philosophers that inspite of the almighty and benign god and the sorrow we see we live in the best possible world.

I associate Mill with his utilitarian (what seems to be called consequentialist) writings and have found them to be very useful in understanding the background of this view of morality. This work on natural philosophy is equally strong and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in serious discussion of the creationist position regarding the origin of human kind. It must be remembered, however, that the book was written in the 19th century when prose was constructed in a far more elaborate style than the 8th grade level that we are used to today.
