5.0 out of 5 stars Inventive...Creative...Satisfying...real jazz music, June 2, 2010

This review is from: Three-Five (Audio CD)

I was fortunate enough to witness Vincent Gardner's exquisite trombone work. First four days ago at a pre-concert workshop in a small historic theater in St. Petersburg, Florida. Vincent discussed his approach to this special music (jazz).
He graciously fielded questions and comments from the audience. In between the talk Vincent played music (along with a wonderful bassist) that illustrated, indeed illuminated, the creative process that underlie the music. Let's just say that it was an excellent workshop.
The workshop was only a hint of what would come the following afternoon at another intimate studio venue in the same city on Florida's west coast. Mr. Gardner's playing was simply awesome!! With the equally awesome piano work of Kenny Drew Jr. and bassist Rodney Jordan and a decent drummer the group was able to weave hard-bop, be-bop, neo-bop magic. I had heard Vincent on the three albums that I own by his trunpet playing brother Derrick. I was also familiar with his leadership role in the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. But nothing prepared me for being 'blown away' by Vencent in a live concert.
So I bought this album. I am not the least bit dissappointed. Buy it. You won't be either!!
