4.0 out of 5 stars Changes were made, but the quality remains, December 7, 1999

Boy, did the Flirts change from their first incarnation of five (or was it six?) male voices. "Three" is just that - 3 voices, and not all male. Jon and Jimmy are from the original group (many of the rest have passed away, including front man Michael Callen, whose solo work is also worth checking out), but they've added lesbian folk icon Suede, and *boy* does she know how to harmonize. I managed to catch them in concert right before their bass left the group, leaving just the three of them, and they really know how to wail. I really think the crown jewel of this piece is "Miss Celie's Blues" - Suede delivers a *smooth* performance, and the boys do fair impressions of muted trumpet backgrounds. Jimmy's much simpler rendition of "Everything Possible," arguably their signature song, still leaves you teary-eyed, probably because it is so much subtler than their earlier versions. Beyond that, they do fun, fresh renderings of some pop, do-wop and a capella favorites like "Time After Time," "Fun, Fun, Fun," "Mister Sandman," and "We Shall Be Free," and surprise you with neat new songs like "Breaths." This is probably the last album the Flirtations as an entity will ever produce, but don't count them out just because they've changed - what you've always loved about them remains.

This is a great version of the Flirtations with Suede as part of the group. Every song on here is played at my workshops particularly "Everything Possible" as well as "On Children".

When I do a workshop on food and body image, I particularly enjoy playing "Food Chain" which lightens the intensity of the work workshop participants come to do on food issues.

It is great to have gay and lesbian friendly songs.
