About the Author

Charles Dickens’s early childhood was happy until his father was imprisoned for debt. The 12-year-old Dickens then began working ten-hour days in a boot-blacking factory pasting labels on the jars of thick polish. The shocking conditions of the factory made a profound impression on him. His anger at his situation and at the conditions endured by working-class people became major themes in his fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Creepy and unforgettable October 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The Signalman is one of the creepiest stories I've ever read... and I've read a lot of creepy tales. It's the implication of the main character's involvement that haunts the reader, the question if the terrible event would have happened had he not interfered.

Charles Dickens' writing style in the "Signalman" feels more antiquated than in some of his other books, with long-winded sentences and slow pace. This may not appeal to all modern readers.

But the plot is as compelling as ever, masterfully crafted, simple and powerful.

The other two stories are not bad either, but it is "The Signalman" that's my favourite. If you haven't read it yet, here's your chance to get it free.

3.0 out of 5 stars Light read May 18, 2013

These short stories will certainly spook the jumpy ones. The rest of us will find them quite alright. I especially liked the premise of the second story but was put off by the long drawn narrative. The third story was perhaps the weakest, but that's only relative.

Overall, this book is a nice, light read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Mmm .... March 28, 2014

Not spooky. Not Dickens best writing. It was like he was writing these stories when tired. The language is too convoluted for my liking - or perhaps I was tired when I read it.

Found this very interesting, learning old style classic style writing. For me the discriptions were long and dry, no color..
