Book Description

Great Novels June 2002
THE NEW RECTOR, TALK OF THE VILLAGE and VILLAGE MATTERS are the first three volumes in the Turnham Malpas series. Rebecca Shaw's novels have been described as 'The Archers with spice' and it is this intimate approach that has made her the bestselling author she is now. THE NEW RECTOR introduces Peter and his wife Caroline to the village. Peter is young, vigorous and very handsome. As rector, the problems of the village become his concern but complications ensue when the newly widowed Suzy Meadows turns to him for comfort. TALK OF THE VILLAGE and VILLAGE MATTERS continue the story of the inhabitants of Turnham Malpas with stories of kidnap and abuse, the new man at the big house and lots of other warm and worrying developments that make this village full of gossip and friendship.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting human drama, November 17, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Three Great Novels (Paperback)
I have read all of rebecca Shaw's novels, having first found them in Britain.
They are centered on small casts of characters living together in small rural settings. She uses this arrangment to comment on the current state of society in Britain and to describe the foibles of humankind. I find them amusing and entertaining. They are not weepy, female fiction, but they do focus on the interaction of the characters. If you enjoy this sort of story that takes its force from the characters rather than the action, you will like these books.

This review is from: Three Great Novels (Paperback)
These books are part of a series that I started reading from my local library, but found that after the first couple of books, they are not published in the U.S., so finding them has not been easy. I enjoyed the first few in the series, and, while I haven't read this one yet, I expect that it will be equally enjoyable. The series takes place in a small Engish village, and includes an interesting cast of characters. Each book introduces new characters, but the main ones stay the same, and are the pivotal characters throughout the series.
