Playing policemen, posing as football players......,
By Lana Durbin (Riverview, FL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Three Little Pigskins [VHS] (VHS Tape)
THREE LITTLE PIGSKINS (1934) - The Three Stooges playing football--it can't get any funnier than this! The best scene is Moe instructing Curly and Larry to "Take the ball and go this way!" The results are HILARIOUS!!!DIZZY DETECTIVES (1943) - The Stooges are VERY funny as policemen. The scene where Moe faints for thinking Curly is killed is hilarious! SOCK-A-BYE BABY (1942) - I wouldn't consider this one a classic, but it was OK. There was a few funny scenes. When babies are involved in their shorts, it doesn't make for a good comedy. If SOCK-A-BYE BABY was replaced with BABY-SITTERS JITTERS it would be perfect. BABY-SITTERS JITTERS was the only really funny baby-involved short. SOCK-A-BYE BABY, however, didn't stop me from giving this tape five stars though. THREE LITTLE PIGSKINS and DIZZY DETECTIVES are two excellent shorts. SOCK-A-BYE BABY is good for a watch or two. If you're a Three Stooges fan like I am, add this one to your collection.

I love the Stooges, but these are not three of their best. They are about 3 1/2 stars."Three little Pigskins" has a pretty funny selzer scene, but the rest is fairly comonplace. "Dizzy detectives" is also mediocre. Slapstick doesn't quite slap. "Sock-a-bye baby" fits in this group as well. I enjoyed it, but it rarely caused a belly laugh and has some banal jokes.

A representative sampling of the work of the Three Stooges,

"Three Little Pigskins" provides a representative sampling of the work of the Three Stooges during the Moe-Larry-Curly period. These three shorts made for Columbia consist of one minor classic, one average effort, and a rather lame one, arranged in that same descending order of quality:"Three Little Pigskins" hails from 1934 and is the fourth of the Columbia shorts and the Three Stooges answer to the climax of "Horse Feathers" where the Marx Brothers destroy a football game. Here the gangster Joe Slack needs some ringers to help his team beat a professional team, especially since Joe has a $50,000 bet on the game. So a young and blond Lucille Ball suggests Joe check out the local college where he gets the mistaken idea the Stooges are football players. On the gridiron the boys try their best, but you know how good that is going to end up being and their are some pretty funny football gags before Joe chases them away with his gun. "Dizzy Detectives" comes from 1943 and starts off with the boys as handymen, engaging in their usual acts of creative destruction, before suddenly joining the police force where they have to solve the Ape Man burglaries. Curly steals this one, as is usually the case, with scenes involving a rocking chair and cat, as well as a rug and a hat. The ending is another example of a gorilla ex machina that provides a climactic explosion. "Sock-a-Bye Baby" is a 1942 short that has a mother leaving her baby in a basket on the doorstep of the Stooges. They take care of little "Jimmy" but then the mother reports the child missing to her husband, who happens to be a cop, and the chase is on. Now, there a few good gags in this one, but the plot idea makes no sense and the fact that the situation is not of their own doing works against the comedy. If this is supposed to be the Stooges' version of Charlie Chaplin's classic "The Kid," then this one is even worse than I think. That last one almost drags this trio of shorts down another star, but the other two are good enough to bring it in under the wire. Besides, if you are talking about representative efforts of the Three Stooges, that comes out at four stars.

Lucy and The Three Stooges.,

THREE LITTLE PIGSKINS- An excellent Three Stooges short. Lucille Ball co-stars in this short and is her funny "Lucy" self, especially talking in pig latin. "Oh onay." Walter Long, who is a foe for Laurel and Hardy, also stars in this short. An excellent short, worth your time.DIZZY DETECTIVES is another great short. The opening where the Stooges work at a wood shop is funny. The fight at the end was great too. A great short. SOCK-A-BYE BABY- A good short. The chase at the end is the best part. Dudley Dickerson is a funny worker toward the end of the short. This is worth your time. The Stooges and Lucy. Who could ask for anything more.

EARLY STOOGES ROCK!!!!,

This was filmed in the stooges' early days. Lucille Ball was in this episode. I found it funny when Larry was hitting on her. I later found out that when the stooges where tackled by an apposing football team, six people either got broken arms or legs. It's a good thing they had stunt doubles!!

As far as the stooges go it is pretty standard fare. Film buffs will get a kick out of Lucy's appearence in this early short, but other that that none of the three are particularly memorable. If you read Moe Howards book MOE HOWARD AND THE THREE STOOGES you will recognize the scene they refused to play and avoided injury because of it. These are avgerage shorts not classic ones however they all are FUNNY! The stooges shorts were not made for great social statements, they were made to make you laugh. If you want to laugh buy it. If you want a socal statement buy Citizen Kane or something.

SOCK THREE LITTLE DETECTIVES,
By Stooge (Naperville, IL USA) - See all my reviews

THREE LITTLE PIGSKINS (1934) - One of the boys earlier shorts, and this is a great one. The part with the Stooges falling down the dumbwaiter is a hoot, and the football scenes in the last half is the highlight. Look for an early appearance from Lucille Ball as a gun moll.DIZZY DETECTIVES (1943) - A great short. I like all the scenes at the old antique store, especially with the ape. The only downer is that the opening scene is reused from PARDON MY SCOTCH (1935). That seemed desperate, and couldn't they think of anything new? SOCK-A-BYE BABY (1942) - The boys did a lot of "baby" shorts, and I never liked any of them. In this particular short, there are too many tenderhearted scenes with the baby, and not enough Three Stooges slapstick - and the slapstick we get seems forced. The ending here had no sting.

This is definitely one of the funniest stooges videos I have ever seen. It has 3 classics. "Three Little Pigskins" is my favorite one for sure. The stooges get mixed up as the famous 3 horsemen, and they have to play a private football game for a mobster. I wont tell u any more, all i can say is that its hilarious. "Dizzy Detectives" is also really funny. The stooges are detectives and they have to catch the crook,"The Ape Man" but they dont know that it really is a real live ape. They get into really funny situations and any stooges fan would enjoy it. "Sock a bye baby" is funny but not as funny as the other two. A mother leaves a baby on the stooges doorstep and they decide to take care of it. It is really funny and it includes a classic scene where the stooges want to feed the baby. So, in conclusion, this video is worth it and I think any stooges fan should get it. |
