Little Truck Lover,
This review is from: The Three Little Rigs (Hardcover)
My son received this book for his 3rd birthday. As most boys, my son loves cars, trucks, planes and trains so this was a perfect choice for him. He LOVES this book! We have been reading it every night for months now and I really enjoy reading it. Even my 5 year old daughter who is learning to read likes reading it to her brother. The pictures are cute and colorful. I plan to buy for all boy birthday's that come up this year. You won't be disappointed in this book.

Excellent book for little truck-lovers!,

I found this book in the local toy store and gave it to my 2 year old son, who LOVES trucks. He already knew the tale of the 3 little pigs, so he was familiar with the storyline, but very intrigued that there was a "similar" tale of trucks. The text follows the traditional story, but uses 3 little rigs and a big bad wrecking ball instead. The illustrations are great too, making this book one of my son's favorites. I'm going to buy Gordon's other book, "The Ugly Truckling" now!

Underwhelming Solution to Bad Guys in this Retake on a Classic Tale,
This review is from: The Three Little Rigs (Hardcover)
I was excited to find a new take on this old "Three Little Pigs" classic. My son loves this book and asked that we request it from the library again. I love most of the characters and how the author transports the story into a trucks and construction type world. The artwork is also very clean and bright and very beautifully done. It's really a joy to look at.I would buy this book except that there is one huge problem with the story line that seriously rubs me the wrong way. **Spoiler Alert** The "big bad wolf" is instead a "big bad wrecking ball". The wrecking ball is at the last little rig's garage trying to tear it apart. He can't wreck the steel garage, so he threatens to come back later. The three little rigs "make a plan" while the big bad wrecking ball is away. The wrecking ball comes back, bringing along his two bad friends - the "mean magnet" and the "cruel cutter". But keep in mind that all of these bad guys are attached to cables... which are hanging from *something*. The three little rigs' "PLAN" ends up being that they run out the back door to beg the cranes for their help --- from whose cables the bad guys are HANGING. What the HECK?!?!! Not only was the "plan" underwhelming, but the little rigs didn't do anything for themselves to fight off the bad guys like in the original story and what the HECK were the "good" cranes doing while the bad guys HANGING from their own booms are carrying out their evil deed of ripping apart the steel garage?!?! Even my son wondered about this and the best explanation I could come up with was that the cranes were sleeping. While this book is beautifully illustrated and most of the characters are very clever, the ending to the story doesn't make sense, makes you feel like you're missing a couple pages, and is unsatisfying to the extreme! A good book to check out from the library, but think twice about investing in it.

I bought this to go along with a truck I sewed out of felt for him. He enjoys the book. A different take on Three Little Pigs. Not his favorite, but he will sit through the whole book being read :)

My son really enjoys this book. We were borrowing it from the library so many times that I decided to buy it for him. Now it's one of his favorites.
You should also look at the other David Gordnon books. They all are just wonderful.

My 4 and 2 year old sons adore this book. The story tracks nicely with the 3 little pigs. But, it is written so that it isn't scary to really young children (or at least not mine, who sometimes can be sensitive to other books). My only complaint is that some of the images are drawn a bit darkly. Still, a great addition to the library that will be read over and over.

LOVE IT!!!,

My 3 year old son absolutely adores this book. The storyline is similar to The Three Little Pigs but with rigs as the main characters. He loves all the smashing, bashing and crashing and wants the book read to him over and over again.

The Ugly Truckling
This David Gordon series (also, The Three Little Rigs) is great for vehicle-mad little boys. You'll immediately recognize the fairy tales from which he has "borrowed." |
