Three Dog Night's First New Album In Nearly 20 Years!,
By William T. Travers Jr. "tomtravers.com" (Long Neck, DE United States) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Three Dog Night with the London Symphony Orchestra (Audio CD)
Well it's been a long time a-coming, but we finally have a brand new Three Dog Night album to listen to. Believe me it was worth the wait. It just goes to show you the veteran bands not only still have it, but they can rock the back sides off of any of these new bands. "With The London Symphony Orchestra", Three Dog Night shows off it's longevity with hot new arrangements of their million selling hits while not straying to far from the original feel of those timeless songs. The powerful orchestra augments these songs with a new freshness that many of the albums recorded with this concept don't come close to. Cory Wells and Danny Hutton's vocals are incredible and if anything have gotten stronger and are packed with the passion of the early recordings. Their interpretations of the songs Chuck Negron sang are shining on this recording and they give these songs a new energy that makes them feel brand new. The band is white hot here with the new technology streaming through the arrangements. Michael Allsup's guitar solos on "Liar" and "Never Been To Spain" are powerful enough, and Jimmy Greenspoons keyboard and B-3 playing are so emotional, but when you add a 100 piece orchestra to the mix it makes the hair stand up on your neck. The rhythm section of Paul Kingerly on bass and Pat Bautz on drums are like a wall of bumping and pumping that give these songs a new millennium kick in the ass. The bonus in this package are the first new Three Dog Night songs in almost twenty years. "Sault Ste. Marie" written by newcomer Kevin Bowe is a very new kind of alternative acoustic country song that evokes the feel of Ryan Adams and Wilco. The hook is beautiful and it still shows the uncanny touch Wells and Hutton have for picking great songs by up and coming artists. The second track "Overground" is another song that feels new with a retro feel and both songs could easily be played on any Adult Contempory or Triple A radio station today. "With The London Symphony Orchestra" was produced by longtime Three Dog Night boardsman, Richard Podolor at American Recording Company in Calabasas, CA and the London Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Larry Baird and recorded at legendary Abbey Road Studios in London, England. This new album and I mean this is a NEW album is a great step into the new millennium. Here's hoping everybody jumps back aboard the Three Dog Night bandwagon. Hey man, I never got off.

TDN & LSO,
By Steve Ziemann (Arlington, Tx USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Three Dog Night with the London Symphony Orchestra (Audio CD)
I really didn't know what to expect from this marriage of symphony and classic TDN material.....but I was very pleasantly surprised. This fusion works very nicely, thank you....As well as the original TDN songs have stood the test of time, the addition of the LSO gave them a whole new feel....And the two newest songs ("Sault Ste. Marie" and "Overground") go to show that they still have that knack for finding great material by lesser known writers. As for Michael Allsup, Jimmy Greenspoon, Pat Bautz and Paul Kingery, in my opinion, all are underrated. This is a very well-done project led by Richard Podolor's producing skills and conductor Larry Baird of the London Symphony Orchestra recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios. If you have ever been a fan of Three Dog Night or have always been a fan, I recommend you get this cd.....you WILL NOT be disappointed.......

WOW!,

This review is from: Three Dog Night with the London Symphony Orchestra (Audio CD)
I've always been a TDN fan, but this time they've really out-done themselves! I am 100% impressed. Most guys tend to lose their voices as they get older---not these guys. The vocals sound better than ever (no coincidence that the weaker singer is no longer involved in the group). I hate to say it, but the tracks actually sound better without Chuck. Nevertheless, this is a fantastic new recording of some classic hits with the added texture of the London Symphony. It really brings the music to a whole new level. The two new cuts on the record ("Overground" and "Sault St. Marie") are just further proof that Cory & Danny still have an incredible knack for choosing strong material. Congratulations guys on a beautiful album---I recommend it HIGHLY to anyone and everyone that enjoys real music.

Good......But Different,

Don't go looking for the old Three Dog Night power-vocals here. These guys have aged a bit and it shows. Simply the fact that they have recorded with an orchestra tells us something. Play something mellow indeed. That being said this is a very good album. It is still a lot of fun to sing along with all the old songs and know that some things can handle a little change. Do they miss Chuck? I don't think there is any evidence of it here, but for a full update on whatever happened to....Check out Chuck's new double live set. Also know that Michael Alsup also has a solo album available. Check out the DVD of Three Dog Night live in 2000.

Nothing but the best,
By Mary T. Vaughan (Arlington, Texas) - See all my reviews

As soon as I heard the CD was available, I immediately had to order it to add to my collection. The instruments of the band have always been right on, but the addition of the London Symphony just adds another dimension to the songs we know and sing along. The two new songs "Sault St. Marie" and "Overground" just adds to the pleasure and wanting more new songs. I am wishing nothing but good things in the future for this great band.

Okay, but not live...,

Maybe it was just me, but I thought this was a LIVE album. Instead, it's basically a studio recording of 3DN with an orchestra for arrangements. Not that it's all bad, but it seems to be basically the same 'ol 3DN songs with a large orchestra for intros and background. A lot of the familiar favorites ( with a couple of exceptions missing...ie. Eli's Coming) but still a good listen of the old favorites.

A must for anyone who enjoys good music!!,

Having been a 3DN fan for over 30 years, to actually hear them with an orchestra behind them was very exciting, and scary!! One wouldn't think that the two would sound so awesome together, but they do. If you have ever enjoyed 3 Dog Night, you know that their harmonies are unsurpassed by any other group. Add to that an orchestra that only enhances those harmonies, and very tight instruments, you have one spectacular CD. I was very skeptical before I heard this cd, but no more. It works!!! Other of the older bands may try this, but I doubt if it would work the way it has with Three Dog Night. They are one tight band! The VHS of 3DN with the Tennesee Symphony Orchestra is also a must-have, to compliment the cd. This band has worked very hard to keep their good name alive and well, through all of their trials. After 30 years in the business, they aren't slacking one bit! Every song is as new as the first day it hit the charts. In addition, the 2 new songs are fabulous. Thanks for adding some new music, to your "new music." This is well worth my money!!

It's the Greatest!,
By Dog Fan (San Antonio, TX) - See all my reviews

It's beautiful! I did not find anything lacking at all. I'd venture to say that it's the best I've ever heard. The addition of the London Symphony was brilliant, as their songs have stood the test of time very well and were written by some of the most talented individuals in the business. Recording at Abbey Road studios was very timely and the singers haven't lost a thing. The powerful harmonies are still there and maybe even better. Don't be fooled by those not doing so well in their careers. If it wasn't fantastic, they would not be coming around to put it down. God bless you, Three Dog Night ... you did it so right!

Great NEW Songs and Remakes,
By A Customer
This review is from: Three Dog Night with the London Symphony Orchestra (Audio CD)
I've been a fan of Three Dog Night since 1971, but I approached this CD with some concern because it's been almost 20 years since they recorded any new songs and their 70s chart hits didn't seem to lend themselves to the symphonic treatment. But, I was very pleasantly surprised. 3DN founders and original lead vocalists Danny Hutton and Cory Wells (who between them sang the original leads on the vast majority of 3DN's original chart hits - third vocalist Chuck Negron, who sang lead on only a few hits, left the group almost 20 years ago), and producer Richard Podolor (who produced the bulk of 3DN's original chart hits) deserve a lot of credit for taking some big artistic risks and pulling it off. The new songs - "Sault St. Marie" and "Overground" - are GREAT and could be big hits if they got the right exposure. If you are an old fan, I think you will love these songs, and if you're a new fan, this CD is a good introduction to their old hits as well. The symphonic arrangements of the hits work surprisingly well, with conductor Larry Baird (of Moody Blues fame) conducting the LSO and Hutton and Wells doing a great job infusing the old hits with a new vitality that surpasses the originals (which, after all, are almost or over 30 years old now). This CD is a smart way to update the distant past and 3DN's legacy while looking toward the future, which is well represented by the new songs. In fact my only complaint is that I wish they had done more new songs, instead of just two, because they are both so great, you will really want to hear more! Hopefully we won't have to wait 20 years for the next CD!
