Creativity marks this Australian jazz trio release, January 6, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Three (Audio CD)
"Three" a new release by Australian jazz pianist, Paul Grabowsky with Niko Schauble, Drums, and Gary Costello, bass offers a strikingly creative addition to jazz trio repertoire. Overall, the sparse and transparent sound of this mellow CD allows the work of each performer to stand out for appreciation. The formal structure of each number is one of natural evolution of ideas as a team, not that of artificial division to feature the skills of each artist. From the mesmerizing opening, "Make it Easy on Yourself," to the unique percussion sounds (complete with surround-sound effects) of "Beyond the Black Suit" and "Trident," to the plaintive piano opening of "A Quiet Place," to the always interesting bass - artistic excellence, teamwork and expectant creativity characterize this release. Conspicuously absent in this set of ten titles composed by Paul Grabowsky is the often typical tendency towards a profusion of improvisatory notes. The result is a collection of soothing transparent beauty. Let's hope for more releases from this Australian trio.
