He's The Man,
By Scott A Cameron (Park Ridge, IL) - See all my reviews

I used to take lessons from Vacca before he relocated. He's an incredible teacher and player. He would pull out a cheap Yamaha and make it wail like you wouldn't believe. Get his cd and if you play jazz get his books. Keep making that music.

Very nice! I thoroughly enjoyed it! Being a beginning jazz player, Mr. Vacca's CD is one I can listen to for inspiration as well as other greats such as Coltrane. He's got great technique and a tasty sound. I look forward to hearing more CD's from him!!!

A Gem from the Desert,
This review is from: Three Point Landing (Audio CD)
Tony Vacca's latest release "Three Point Landing" is an excellent album. From the lush "Body and Soul" to the soulful "Sugar" to the breezy "Cerromar" there is something for everyone. This album is worth the listener's time because it has a great cast of players, a diverse selection of songs, and creative, melodic improvisations.Tony Vacca is joined by group of extremely talented musicians. The cast reads like a who's who of jazz: Rolan Guerin on bass, Peter Martin on piano, and Jason Marsalis on drums. Producer and trumpeter Irvin Mayfield joins in on "Shoe Suede Blues" and Aaron Fletcher provides a beautiful Alto solo on "You Don't Know what Love Is". All the sidemen contribute to this wonderful album with their unique sensitivity to style, and well-built solos. In addition to a superb cast, this album has a very wide selection of songs. The listener can be transported to the French Quarter with "On Bourbon Street", then immediatly taken home to a romantic, candlelight dinner with their lover when Tony plays "Body and Soul." A fatal error made by many jazz musicians today, is that all their songs can tend to sound the same. On this album, one can be assured of diverse listening! Finally, the creative improvisations of all the band members are the most compelling reason to buy this album. In all honesty, those who prefer the avant-garde may become a little bored with this album. However, nowadays, many people try too hard to please that small group of "elitists." Each of the solos on this album are melodic and have a clear beginning, middle and end. In a sense, each soloist is telling the listener a clear story. Although no one is breaking any major barriers, it is pleasant to listen to. Often times, muscians forget that when trying to be "hipper than the other cats." "Three Point Landing" is a valuable addition to any music collection. Without a doubt, Tony Vacca has created a CD that anyone, children and parents alike, can enjoy. As the great bassist Christian McBride once said "Jazz is not an exclusive club." Thanks to talented musicians like Tony Vacca, the world of jazz is becoming more and more interesting for everyone.

Tony's style and skill really comes out in this CD. I love the mood that this CD puts me in. The Sax performance on the CD is one of the best that I have heard in a long time. I am looking forward to his next CD. If you are a Jazz lover this CD is a must have for your home music collection! Spread the word! This is a great Jazz CD.

From beginning to end, Tony Vacca's Three Point Landing is a jazz CD that will appeal to anyone who enjoys great music. I cannot single out one song on the CD that is anything less than a hit in my book. My personal favorite is "Shoe Suede Blues". Just play this track and seconds later you'll find yourself unable to quit tapping your toes. As somebody that has a somewhat less than diverse collection of music, I would like to thank Tony for opening my eyes to the world of great jazz music. I would highly suggest this CD to anyone who loves jazz and even to anyone who hasn't ventured into this excellent genre of music.

This album is an Absolute Must!!!Tony Vacca presents an awesome mix of new and classic jazz styles. Will he ever stop?? Tony Vacca is most definetely one of THE BEST saxaphonists in Arizona. His sax is not only his instrument but a means for bringing the listener on a journey. His graceful style swings with exiting changes that are both unpredictable and satisfying. Tony Vacca's songs truly bring the radio to life! Making a name for himself across the country, Mr. Vacca is giving true jazz listeners what they want to hear: smooth jazz with real talent! Three Point Landing leaves the listener with a feeling of exitement and relaxation. Tony Vacca brings the mood from a fun high to a smooth low, and back again for a truly complete thought. Even when listening to his slow melodies, you can't help but feel exited about the future of Jazz. Tony Vacca is setting the jazz community in the right direction with spririted sax-playing and great support. This album is truly uplifting and calming; a true package of great music. Three Point Landing displays Tony's increasing skill, and presents his understanding of the listener.
If you like Jazz you'll love Tony Vacca and Three Point Landing!
