Worth It Just For Track 3, Mancini Medley,
By
This review is from: Three for the Road (Audio CD)
I happen to be listening to this as I type at my PC and figured it was worth a review.Wonderful stuff all throughout but the Mancini medley is from another planet. It starts with the theme from "Two For The Road", trombone lead accompanied by piano. Then a guitar-led version of Royal Blue, a rarely-performed gem by Mancini. Finally, a solo piano version of Dreamsville, by far the most stunning version of the song I have ever heard. Unlike so many musicians, Don Thompson plays this song very simply, stressing the incredibly lovely chords of the song. This medley is worth 10 stars, thus the rating.

Americans usually pay little attention to Canadian performers. It's sad, but true. As a jazz musician myself I can tell you the truth. Jazz is healthier in Europe than Canada & the United States. On this CD you will find three of the finest musicians that Canada has ever produced. My favorite tune is "Dream a little dream of me," if I had to pick one, but that is a personal thing. I won't reiterate what the other reviewer said about the Mancini medley. He's right on the money. Another medley of two tunes; "Last Night when we were young" & "Young & Foolish" is a masterpiece of great jazz. Ed Bickert, on his old Fender Telecaster guitar has become one of the finest jazz guitarists in the world. If Paul Desmond, who recorded at least 3 albums with Bickert, & Jim Hall, another great jazz guitarist (Americans both) say Ed is one of the top 5 jazz guitarists in the world, what better recommendation can you get? the third medley is'I'm through with love/ & Seems like old times" & it's great. I have listened over & over to this CD, & if I could give it more than five stars I would. Don Thompson is also one of the greatest bass players I've ever heard, let alone met. I know Ed also. No jazz collection would be complete without this one.

This is a very mellow disc from three members of the Boss Brass. Leader Rob McConnell on trombone, with his cohorts Ed Bickert on guitar, and Don Thompson on piano and bass serve us some easy listening jazz. This is definitely the quieter side of the Boss Brass. Would I buy this disc again? Yes!
