5.0 out of 5 stars Music that breathes., May 6, 1999
By mesh_exp@hotmail.com (Sydney, Australia) - See all my reviews
After discovering Idaho in 1994 with the release of 'Year after Year' (Still my favourite Idaho album, and possibly my most prized CD in my collection), this work has been a profound influence on my life ever since.

Jeff Martin creates delicately haunting soundscapes: fragile, almost playful one moment (often belied by the content of the lyrics), before switching to a brooding sonorous intensity captures all the poignant sadness of life in a moment. Musically, the album is less grim, less reliant on power chords and feedback than Year after Year (as are This Way Out and Alas) but there are moments when the intensity, often conveyed by the lyrics is more mature, more evocative than the earlier work.

I won't select tracks as I can only say listen to it yourself, and discover your own levels and meaning. Idaho is alway personal but it is for anyone who understands and knows the fragile beauty and naked despair that comes with living.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lush, memorizing, brilliant., June 28, 2009
Lush, memorizing, brilliant. Idaho create a sort of bleak, minimalist soundscape, a cross between shoegaze sounds (My Bloody Valentine, Drop Nineteens) and early 90's grunge rock (Bush, Nirvana, Sonic Youth).

I own a lot of records and this is easily in my top 10. A must have.

3.0 out of 5 stars Idontknow, February 23, 2009
Not being the biggest fan of this competent, though what I would describe as second-tier, slow core group, it is still hard to deny that they came up with some beautifully bleak, minimal mope-rock. Although TSTTW contains a few of these deal-sealing tracks where Idaho seems completely in their element, there are not nearly enough standouts to constitute this disc often being cited as their finest work.

I have bought this CD 3 or 4 times--I've given it to friends because they hear it and can't live without it. It sounds amazing, start to finish. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Among the best ever.
Yes, it's true. Of my 300+ albums this is easily in the top ten. Shimmering, lush, and beautiful. Check 'em out at idahomusic.com You'll never be the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars #1 album of 1996
This was the #1 album of 1996 (a year that gave us Built to Spill's "There's nothing wrong with love" among others).
