Book Description

May 5, 2006
Meet Pete Brown—beer journalist, beer drinker, and author of an irreverent book about British beer, Man Walks Into A Pub. One day, Pete's world is rocked when he discovers several countries produce, consume, and celebrate beer far more than we do. The Germans claim they make the best beer in the world, the Australians consider its consumption a patriotic duty, the Spanish regard lager as a trendy youth drink and the Japanese have built a skyscraper in the shape of a foaming glass of their favorite brew. At home, meanwhile, people seem to be turning their back on the great British pint. What's going on? Drinking in more than 300 bars, in 27 towns, in 13 different countries, on four different continents, Pete puts on 10 pounds and does irrecoverable damage to his health in the pursuit of saloon-bar enlightenment.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"In the end, Three Sheets to the Wind demonstrates how, even though we enjoy beer differently, we're all fundamentally the same."  —Freetime Magazine --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

From the Back Cover

If we’re living in the global village, where’s it’s pub?

Meet Pete Brown: beer journalist, beer drinker and author of an irreverent book about British beer, Man Walks Into A Pub. One day, Peter’s world is rocked when he discovers there are several countries that produce, consume and celebrate beer far more than we do. The Germans claim they make the best beer in the world, the Australians consider its consumption a patriotic duty, the Spanish regard lager as a new trendy youth drink and the Japanese have built a skyscraper in the shape of a foaming glass of their favourite brew. At home, meanwhile, people seem to be turning their back on the pleasures of the great British pint. What’s going on?

Obviously, the only way to find out was to go on the biggest pub crawl ever. Drinking in more than three hundred bars in twenty-seven towns in thirteen different countries on four different continents, Pete puts on a stone in weight and does irrecoverable damage to his health in the pursuit of saloon bar enlightenment. Attitudes to beer and its drinking provide unique insight into the off-duty, celebratory soul of nations. In the course of his quest, Pete meets a wild cast of bleary eyed eccentrics and samples legendary brews in legendary establishments from Sydney to Munich to Barnsley.

Three Sheets To The Wind is a joyous, hilarious life changing adventure to the heart to beer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like beer? You'll like this book., August 2, 2007

If you've ever sat in a pub with a pint and wondered how people approach their beer drinking in other countries (or how it is brewed, marketed, served, and what food is served with it), you'll enjoy this book! The author combines a healthy dose of British humor with a genuine love of beer to recount his world travels. Warning: I was subject to occasional intense cravings of the beers that Mr. Brown drank around the world while reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars New learnings from the pint of Beer!, June 28, 2009
I did not think this book was useful for my research within the UK brewery industry. However, I could not put this book down. It was a quick read and very humorous. As I read through each chapter, I could only imagine how the pub looked and even how the beer tasted. This book makes me want to travel and really see how the different countries have different reactions for the common drink of beer. I particularly like the ad-lib of Anheiser-Busch as well as the description of the rise of the US beer culture. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about the global, cultural history of beer. It's not just for beer drinkers, everyone will enjoy it!

Purchased for my grown son, who is a beer "expert". He has read it from cover to cover and learned even more than he knew already.
