4.0 out of 5 stars A good document of the band in 1981

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have been better
I loved Genesis. I saw them twice, once on the tour this album comes from, and loved both shows. This album could have been better, but for some reason it falls flat a bit.

Want a great live Genesis album, get LIVE, the first one with Peter Gabrial, or Seconds Out.

Genesis were at a peak of pop creativity at this stage, the more progressive period for the band having already largely passed. So a live performance at this stage had to include such hits as "Misunderstanding", "Turn It On Again", "Abacab" and "No Reply At All" (curiously omitted is any performance of "Follow You, Follow Me", the band's first US Top-30), and they execute them well. Thrown in are the "In the Cage" medley (featuring bits of "Cinema Show", "Slippermen" and all of "Afterglow"), "Dodo/Lurker" and "Behind the Lines".

Visually, the video is fascinating because 8MM film was apparently chosen to do the filming with. This gives a grainy, stark, rather dated feel to the performance and interviews, but one I feel is entirely appropriate to the time and purpose of the filming. In short, it enhances it without being distracting.

My one caveat with all of this is that certain songs were cut short or had unnecessary interviews thrown in. "Dodo" is missing its opening 25 seconds, "Behind the Lines" has about 1 minute 20 seconds taken out of its opening instrumental, "Duchess" has a similar thing done and has bits of an interview thrown in in between verses, "Me and Sarah Jane" is missing its latter third, "No Reply at All" has its ending shortened, and only about 1 minute of "Man on the Corner" is included (my biggest beef--all other doctored songs were released live in album form in one way or another). The interview near the end is nice, but ultimately I would have preferred the songs be full-length. Some of the camera work in the concert is...primitive, revealing a lack of knowledge of the band's way of playing--Daryl Steurmer's interesting guitar parts in "Cinema Show" are completely ignored, for instance.

"Turn It On Again", "Behind the Lines", and "Duchess" were all the versions released on the "Three Sides Live" album.

All in all, a very good video. Just know its limitations before getting it, and you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genesis Concert Videos, September 11, 2000

I would buy a copy of the Genesis - Three Sides Live video in a heart beat. As of this posting it's not available.

I would also pay a premium for the GENESIS: IN CONCERT 1976 video. Back in the late '70s, it was a midnight showing at a couple of local movie theaters in and around Philly. Several other posts refer to it as the "Seconds Out" video. It may also be called The Genesis Movie by some. It's from the A Trick of the Tail tour.

While we're at it, I would also buy Genesis concert videos from the Peter Gabriel era in a heart beat.

Amazon...I would bet that Genesis has the material. Maybe you can influence them to produce and release it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Video, November 29, 2003

Ok so my review title sucks but read my review i think you'll find it helpful. Now I'm not really sure if I am reviewing the right product because i typed in THREE SIDES LIVE and 2 results came back. Anyway this is a great video of Genesis touring circa 1981/82 in support of the album ABACAB. The track listing is as follows:
BEHIND THE LINES
DUCHES
MISUNDERSTANDING
DODO
ABACAB
NO REPLY AT ALL
WHO DUNNIT
IN THE CAGE(MEDLEY-CINEMA SHOW-SLIPPERMEN)
AFTERGLOW
ME AND SARAH JANE
MAN ON THE CORNER

Most of the songs here are from the 3 albums that they'd done as a trio up to that point. They play quite a few of the hits("Misunderstanding", "Ababcab", "No Reply At All", "Man on the Corner", "Turn it on Again"), some older songs i didn't really recognize("In the Cage", "Afterglow"). As a warning this is not an entire concert. It's footage of their '81 tour of America and Europe. I know for sure the first song was performed at the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, there was another where they said Wembley which I'm guessing was Wembley Arena because it looked indoors. There's interviews with Phil Collins and the band inbetween songs. There's those weird songs from Abacab like "Dodo" and "Who Dunnit". Then there's also "Me and Sarah Jane" which is kind of an acquired taste. And since this was taken from the "Abacab" tour it would've been nice to hear "Keep it Dark". But i guess you can't please everybody. The video is a total of 84 minutes long and should be released on DVD. Ive never seen or listened to the way we walk concert so I can't really compare and/or contrast them but ive seen the songs on TWWW and most of them are from Genesis, Invisible Touch, and We Can't Dance. So as far as song selection if you like the first albums with Collins at the mic this is the video for you.

What can I say... Three Sides Live, Seconds Out and The Mama Tour were great shows. We are at the bottom of 2005. What the industry is thinking of. Come on release the DVDs!!!!. VHS is no good anymore.
Same thing happens with Alchemy (Dire Straits) Delicate Sound of Thunder (Pink Floyd). Show some priorities for cying out loud!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars CROSS-ROADS FOR GENESIS, August 5, 2000

I'm not that big a fan of the post-Abacab period from Genesis. I'm more into the pre-period of it. However,I did see this show and it shows Genesis on the cross-road of two era. The shows before this one are much more progressive and symphonic and this show tends to show the commercial side Genesis is going to and led them eventualy to this drag of an album:Calling All Stations. This show is still a good show and I enjoyed it very much. The sound and vision is perfect but, looking back in hindsight, it is one of their last great prog.rock shows they did. After this show the tendecy to slip into commercial suicide is evident.
