A few months ago, I was wandering around downtown Montreal when I came across the biggest Chapters/Indigo store I had ever seen. So, of course I went in. And then things kind of got surreal, the clerks were moving about the store with trays handing out small bowls of the best Greek salad I had ever tasted (and I know my Greek salad!) Finally someone pointed me to the book signing at the front of the store and I bought myself a signed copy of 'Three Sisters Around the Greek Table: A Cookbook' by (you'll never guess) three Greek sisters: Betty, Eleni and Samantha Bakopoulos.

Greek food is a huge weakness of mine but I have never been able to satisfactorily cook much of anything Greek. Believe it or not, just throwing lemon on some meat does not a good Greek dish make. Well, the first recipe I made from my new favorite cookbook was that Greek salad. And mine turned out just as good as the samples in the store! I will never use store bought Greek salad dressing again!! It was so easy and so amazingly delish.

We all know one good recipe does not a great cookbook make. So I tried more ... and more ... and got rave reviews from my family and friends. I'll admit I haven't tried every recipe in the book (I just can't make myself cook rabbit, no matter how good the recipe may be) but I have tried many of them. Guess what? With this book in hand, I can cook Greek!! Everything I have made has turned out very, very well. The recipes are simple and I almost always have the ingredients on hand. In case you are new to having ingredients on hand, there is a section on stocking your pantry the Greek way.

There are also menu ideas organized by season and occasion - including a couple of vegetarian menus.

This is a terrific collection of Greek-American recipes that is both authentic and artistically put together. Every dish has a full color photo and includes a mix of black and white atmospheric and family pics to augment the food shots. According to the text and web site these photos are of the actual dishes just prepared in the family kitchen and then photographed by a family member; not wax or plastic food models assembled by a set designer in some urban photography studio (which is all too common in the cookbook trade). The recipes are broken down into categories such as appetizers, soups & salads, breads, vegetarian dishes, main courses, etc. Besides the expected Dolmades and Spanakopita, the book is filled with little side dishes that you're not going to find anywhere else unless you routinely get invited to a Greek family's dinner table (Baked Elephant Beans, Olive Tapenade & Goat Cheese on Pita, Shrimp with Ouzo & Red Chilies, and MANY more). And don't worry there's plenty of meat dishes (Beef Tenderloin Stuffed with Figs & Apricots, Roasted Leg of Lamb, Fresh Herb Crusted Rack of Lamb, and a Lemon Chicken that might have even made Ray Barone happy). There's desserts, breads, directions on preparing real Greek coffee, and instruction on the proper serving of Ouzo; the sisters have pretty much got it covered. They even include a short section on pantry staples to keep on hand AND, with a few exceptions, these dishes are all pretty simple to put together without a lot of panic in the kitchen. If you only buy one Greek cookbook (and you're not interested in having a travelogue of the Greek Isles mixed in with it) buy this one.

So why not 5 stars? Because some of the text is in a (very) pale blue ink that, while stylish, is devilishly hard to read in anything but the best light.
