Book Description

Charlie Moon Mysteries September 30, 2008

All Charlie Moon wanted to do was enjoy a night of poker with his best friend and Granite Creek police chief Scott Parris. But that was before Scott’s dispatcher cut in with an emergency call. A man was on the phone with his wife when their call was interrupted by a bloodcurdling scream. Would Charlie and Scott mind checking it out?

Arriving on the scene, they discover that the man’s wife, who is the daughter of a wealthy and influential rancher, has been mauled beyond recognition. Is this the work of a hungry bear? Or something far more sinister? The whole family—including the victim’s sister, a popular TV psychic who on that very night happened to “see” a murder happen in real-time—is demanding answers. But if there’s one person who can solve the case, it’s Charlie’s aunt Daisy. She’s an aged Ute shaman whose investigative talents rely heavily on help from the spirit world. Can she see the truth…and help track down a killer?

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. The12th Charlie Moon mystery (after 2006's Stone Butterfly) from world-class storyteller Doss has more twists and turns than the road to Charlie's acerbic Aunt Daisy's. The ratings for Colorado's most famous TV psychic, Cassandra Spencer, go through the roof when she describes a truck-stop murder as it takes place, but she fails to predict the horrific death of her newly wed eldest sister, Astrid, apparently mauled by a wild animal. Rancher Charlie Moon, a Ute tribal investigator, and his best friend, Granite Creek police chief Scott Parris, team up with Aunt Daisy and her connections in the spirit world to search for an inhumane—and possibly inhuman—killer, while Cassandra and her remaining sister, Beatrice, vie for the hand of Astrid's widower, who has secrets of his own. Doss's narrative and chatty asides are finely cut gems. This latest Colorado mystery leaves no doubt that Doss has carved out his own niche. (Nov.)

From Booklist

This is the twelfth Charlie Moon mystery and one of the best (it features some of the most entertaining characters). Investigating a murder is never an easy thing, but when a local woman is killed, and her two sisters (one of them a prominent television psychic) show up in Granite Creek demanding swift justice, Charlie soon realizes this case has "problem" written all over it. But Charlie has been a tribal investigator for a long time, and he knows how to roll with the punches. Even though the sisters are definitely a handful, Charlie never loses his cool. As usual, he's ably assisted by his friend, police chief Scott Parris, and by his aunt Daisy, a Ute shaman whose connections with the spirit world often come in handy. Although both writers combine mystery and Native American mythology in their novels, Doss is long past the time when he needs to be compared to Tony Hillerman. Doss is a powerful force in his own right and deserves equal recognition. Pitt, David --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

2.0 out of 5 stars What Happened to the Real James D. Doss, November 19, 2007
For the first time in a Charlie Moon mystery, I am hardly able to wade through the book. This new writing style makes it very hard to follow the story line, which starts out to be a great story, but is so chopped up with cute little asides, that I am ready to just read the end and be done with it. Even the characters personalities do not seem right. So please, give us back the real author and get back to those great and sometimes a little bit scarry Charlie Moon mysteries.

3.0 out of 5 stars Change of Pace, November 10, 2007
What happened? The characters are fascinating, the pace is fast, intriguing plot, and there are some adroit lines, but this Charlie Moon suffers from too much author interference. The author asides are confusing. Are they ironic or sarcastic?
The ending lasted about six pages too long; p. 296 is a satisfying conclusion. The last ten pages are just plain corny. Maybe the reader expects more of James Doss. THREE SISTERS does not deliver, except in rare passages does Doss's lyrical prose style surface. There is also, a notable change in the values of the characters which makes the reading jarring, especially if you've followed the series. We'll wait for the next one to see if Charlie & Daisy get back on track.

3.0 out of 5 stars what happened to his writing style?, November 1, 2007

I really like the Charlie Moon books. The stories are interesting and funny and Aunt Daisy is wonderful. It has also been interesting to watch the author grow as a writer. I don't know what happened. This plot isn't bad, but the writing is, well, I don't know what to say. Arch? Maybe the author no longer has anyone who will tell him the truth about his books. Disappointing.
