Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The Eyres ( Teaching Your Children Values ) are supremely qualified to write a book about families: they have nine children. And all families, they advise us, need three elements: a legal system for settling disputes and setting rules, an economy to teach financial responsibility and an identity for building strong values and traditions. Unlike many other parenting books, this one encourages parents to respect children without coddling them. Practical and clear-cut methods put much responsibility on the children, while fostering their sense of security, enabling them to become successful and independent adults. The Eyres encourage such things as establishing a "family bank" into which children can deposit or withdraw funds they have earned; and allowing children over age 8 to purchase their own clothing. The authors urge families to build habits that are both enjoyable and productive, and to hold regular meetings to which everyone contributes. Italicized comments from the authors' children--including misspellings--add perspective and a human touch. While the methods here are systematic and fun, dual-income parents may find it hard to find time to implement them.

From Library Journal

Taking the position that strong families are necessary for a stable society, the authors stress discipline, sharing, and consistency in this prescription for raising children. They point out that every institution must have a legal system, an economy, and traditions that it can adhere to, with the family being no exception. Reading in turns along with their five children, the Eyres share how their family uses these three categories to build strong and lasting bonds. Refreshing as this message is, with its emphasis on values and stability, it strongly promotes the role of Christianity in family traditions, something that may not suit all listeners. Also, despite assertions to the contrary, the Eyre family seems unrealistically happy and functional; perhaps this is because they do not have to deal with the unemployment, alternative lifestyles, single parenting, and poverty that confront many of today's families. However, the sections on the family legal system and economy make the tape worthwhile for general collections in public libraries.

This is a great book that provides concrete ideas for teaching your kids about money and setting up an allowance systemand a family justice system. It is so good that I have bought it twice. The second time at my husband's request when we couldn't find the first copy. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great ideas and examples., November 2, 2011

I love how this book was simple and had so many great ideas with specific examples. It really took an idea and illustrated how to use it and gave ideas of ways to mold it to best suit your family. I also love how open and honest the authors are that they are not a perfect family and have to work at keeping it together also. I just got their new book on entitlement and can't wait to read it.
