Sentimental, Sweet Stooges On This Classic Children's LP,
This review is from: The Three Stooges (Audio CD)
The Three Stooges must have been gratified by the late 1950s to have won over a new audience, via TV, to their then 25-year-old classic short films. It brought their classic comedy to new fans even to this day, explaining why this LP, sub-titled, "The Nonsense Songbook," has remained in print 40 years after its original Coral Records release. Alhtough most of the Stooges' fun came from seeing, not hearing, them slap and crash their way through every situation, this LP is more for the kids who saw their second set of delightful, full-length childrens' films ("Snow White and The Three Stooges," "The Outlaws Is Coming.") It's wonderful hearing "The Alphabet Song" again, hearing Larry substitute "darn" in "Three Little Fishes," even their sweet versions of "Chickory Chick" and Fanny Brice's "Mairzy Dotes." Lew Douglas' orchestrations recall nothing so much as the classic cartoon scores of Winston Sharples and Carl Stalling. Only one regret...that, despite Curley Joe DeRita's fine performance here, the original and best Curly passed not only before being able to sing on this record, but before he could be recognized for the comic genius he was. Here's hoping MCA, Rhino, or some other heritage-minded music firm re-releases the Stooges' original "Swingin' The Alphabet," "She Was Brred In Old Kentucky," and the other delightful songs from more than 40 years of classic Stooge films. Recommended for kids and Stooge fans everywhere.

This is pure, innocent Stooges-fun that makes me smile.,

This review is from: The Three Stooges (Audio CD)
I've been a fan of the Three Stooges career for years. I have a copy of this album on vinyl and am glad to see it finally reissued on CD. I gave it five stars because I truly believe that fans of the Three Stooges, even Curly Howard purists, will enjoy these recordings that Moe Howard and Larry Fine made with 1960's-era third stooge, Joe DeRita. My favorite songs in the collection are "Mairzy Doats," and the reworking of "The Alphabet Song," originally performed with Curly in the Columbia Pictures two-reel comedy, "Violent is the Word For Curly." "The Madcap Musical Nonsense" CD speaks to the inner-stooge in all of us. It is innocent, child-like fun that will bring smiles to all the young-at-heart. I hope more of the Stooges LPs make the transition to compact disc. God bless the Stooges wherever they may be.

Cool Songs by the famous entertaniers!!!,
This review is from: The Three Stooges (Audio CD)
These songs are hilarious. If you ever watched their shorts, you will laugh. Some like "Play a Simple Melody" and "Old McDonald had a Farm" are some old classics. The ABC song though is from one of there shorts. They teach a whole bunch of schoolkids by singing the alphabet and the kids take over. This is a must item for kids and even adults.

I purchased this cd a couple of months ago because I have always loved the Stooges and their antics. My five year old daughter has learned the "ABC" song and "Mairzy Doats" and sings them often. My Mother has enjoyed it as well as my Grandfather. Great old time songs and great quality sound for such old songs. So not only is it entertaining, it has taught my daughter her vowels! A+++++

Wonderful CD for both adults and children! Many of my friends have requested that I get them a copy of this CD. The songs are neat: some of these songs date back to the 1900's. Each stooge voice is distinct. I would recommend this CD to everyone from Stoogephiles to children.

GREATEST "HITS",
By Jukebox Dave (RECORD TOWN, USA) - See all my reviews

Okay, so it ain't Curly, or even Shemp for that matter, but this STILL stands as the one and only Stooges album out there. The last lineup of every redblooded male's fave knuckleheads recorded a bunch of kiddie classics, complete with the requisite mayhem that is all things Stooges. Moe, Larry, and Curly Joe, stars of full length movies, comic books, and cartoon shorts of the 60's blunder their way through such dumb ditties as Looney Tunes theme THE MERRY-GO-ROUND BROKE DOWN, MAIRZY DOATS, ABA DABBA HONEYMOON, even OLD MACDONALD. Youngsters will probably get the most out of it, even as we so-called "grown-ups" pine longingly for a REAL Stooge retrospective spotlighting audio clips from their Columbia shorts' musical highlights with Curly and Shemp. What we'd REALLY like is the original SWINGIN' THE ALPHABET ("B-A-BAY, B-E-BEE, B-I-BICKEY-BI, B-O-BO, BICKEY-BI-BO...", reprised here to lesser effect with Curly Joe), OH ELAINE, COME OUT, even something from WOMEN HATERS, their all-sung debut. And howsabout shovin' in that Jump in the Saddle Band hit tribute THE CURLY SHUFFLE for extra good measure? The title for this "wish-list" album of amalgomated morons?...THE THREE STOOGES' GREATEST "HITS"! Why, coitenly!!!

Can they sing? Why coitenly!,

I take a lot of long car trips with my daughter, and Barney songs get old really fast. I've always loved the three stooges films, and I remembered the Alphabet Song, so I figured I'd give this album a try. Imagine my surprise when we both started singing along with it!
The songs on this album are a mixture of kid's classics (This Old Man, Old MacDonald), old time tunes (Peggy O'Neil, The Merry Go-Round Broke Down) and witty tunes disguised as nonsense songs (Mairzy Doates). As for the stooges, no they don't sound like the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, but so what? They sing in tune, but more importantly they genuinely loved performing, and every jolly note they warble is filled with that love. I can recommend this album to anyone with kids (don't worry, there's no slapping or eye-poking). I can also recommend it to adult stooges fans (if that's not a contradiction in terms). It's fun, it's catchy, and its better than a poke in the eye, nyuk nyuk!

The Stooges Sing!,
By Chuck Potocki (Crown Point, Indiana) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Three Stooges (Audio CD)
This album was originally released as "Nonsense Songbook" in 1960 on the Coral Records label, and features the "latter day" Stooges (Moe, Larry, "Curly" Joe DeRita). The boys were enjoying a second wave of popularity in the late 50's and early 60's following the release to television of their 1930's Columbia shorts featuring Curly, and the demand for the Stooges was at an all-time high; this album was just a small part of the huge number of Stooges-related merchandise inundating the marketplace at the time.
The best words to describe this album are "pure fun"! Every song featured here is a bonafide kid's classic, and the boys really seemed to be having a great time singing them. When I listened to it for the first time, I was surprised to find how many of the songs I still knew by heart and was singing right along with! The highlight of the album is "The Alphabet Song", which was originally featured in the classic 1938 Stooges short "Violent Is The Word For Curly"; other favorites include "Give Thanks", "Mairzy Doats" and "Chickery Chick". A fun time is guaranteed for one and all, young and old...sing along with the Stooges!

Can't Believe This Is Still In Print!,
By Wendy A Myers (Houston, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Three Stooges (Audio CD)
I had this actual 33-1/3 record album when I was a child (late 60's) and spent many, many hours sitting in front of the stereo listening to it - I played it ragged! I was both shocked and delighted to see that it's still in print to this day! Listening to it for the first time since my album days brings back so many great memories and brought tears of happiness to my eyes. When I was a child I liked "The Alpabet Song", "Mairzy Doats", and "Three Little Fishies" the best and overall there isn't a bad song on this CD! I'm expecting my first child in July and I purchased this CD for him/her. I'm hoping he/she gains as many happy memories listening to it as I did when I was a child - and even now! A+++++ CD! BUY IT!

Fun CD For Kids and Adults Who Love Vintage Songs,

The Stooges sound pretty good together in this combination of fun songs. I was searching for the 20's song, "The Merry-go-round Broke Down" (which eventually became the theme song for Looney Tunes cartoons), and came across the Stooges album on the Net (which included this song -- and very well done, I might add). I never knew they put out an album!
This was orginially produced in 1960, well after high fidelity, so the CD sounds great. Since it was done in 1960, the third Stooge at the time was Curly Joe. But they do one of my favorite songs from a Stooges short (originally done with Curly in the late 30's), "The Alphabet Song" (you know, B E be, B I Bi, B I bicky bi B O Bo Bicky Bi Bo B U Bu Bicky Bi Bo Bu") Such fun. And, between the song and downloading the above lyrics from the net, I can FINALLY sing it! Another favorite is "Mairzy Doats." Aba Daba Hooneymoon is fun, and so is the ragtime, "Play A Simple Melody." Some other songs are more for kids (the original target audience). But, all in all, a CD worth buying. |
