3.0 out of 5 stars Well Worth the Price.
MEET THE BARON. What a cast. MGM threw in enough players to make the film even the plot is hard to discern. No matter, the film charges along with enough sub-plots to keep one's interest. The weak link seemed to me to be Jack Pearl whose (German ?)accent began to be rather annoying after a time. Worth watching twice to find out just what is going on. GOLD RAIDERS. Two...

I'm glad to see Meet The Baron is finally released on dvd. I just bought this the other day. Been wanting to see this movie for a long time. As a big stooges fan. Meet the baron isn't all that good of a movie. This is the stooges early stuff. When the stooges show up their scenes as janitors, they are great. Even with Ted Healy. There only in the movie 20 minutes. Gold Raiders, I wasn't all that familiar with. But it is pretty good. The stooges are in it 90% of the time. This can be considered as good as their shorts. It was made in 1951 with shemp. So they had their act down pat. I would like more of the early stooge stuff released on dvd (pre Columbia). Soup To Nuts is also in my collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two Rare Three Stooges movies finally come to DVD!, July 5, 2007

I got this on DVD just last month, I've been waiting years to see these movies and it's great that you get two for the price of one.

"Gold Raiders" is from 1951 and so the lineup is Moe, Larry and Shemp. It's is a pretty good movie, a nice little comedy/western with The Three Stooges provide the big laughs of course. I really enjoyed the fact they are the co-stars of this movie along with George O'Brien so they are onscreen almost the whole movie. The acting from O'Brien and everyone else is pretty good and the plot is simple but with some neat little twists. The Stooges are in about 90% of the movie and it dragged in a few parts when the Stooges were absent for a long time. Other than that I really liked it.

"Meet The Baron" is from 1933 back when Curly first joined the act to replace his brother Shemp, and the boys worked under their friend and fellow comedian Ted Healy. The movie is about a seamster (Jack Pearl) who impersonates the famous adventurer Baron Munchausen (the character Pearl was famous for playing on radio) with Jimmy Durante as his sidekick/manager Joseph Magoo. Ted, Moe, Larry and Curly play bumbling janitors at Cuddle College, an all girls school where the Baron has been asked to speak at. Ted and the Stooges are not in the whole movie, they are in a supporting role here, but when they do show up they really steal the show! The sequence where they are asked to fix the water pipes in the girls shower room is extremly funny! Its a okay movie made better thanks to Healy and the Stooges, although Pearl and Durante do some pretty funny stuff themselves.

Both movies are in good shape, and they have been rarely seen in the past few decades so it's nice they are finally out for everyone to see on DVD.

The only negative for me is the lack of extras, you only get the theatrical trailer for "Meet The Baron" and that's it! Why couldn't they have added in the trailer for "Gold Raiders" too? (That can be found on the Live and Hilarious DVD from Legend Films) Even a commentary track would have been nice.

Despite that, I'm really glad I bought this DVD. If your a Three Stooges fan it's well worth your time to check these two movies out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Your Not A Stooge Fan Without These DVD., April 8, 2009
This review is from: The Three Stooges - Meet the Baron/The Gold Raiders (DVD)
Ted Healy and his Stooges are great DVDs. To see the Three Stooges before they were stars was awesome to see. My dad got me into the Stooges and now I'm hooked. No one can ever fill their shoes. To see Jimmy Durante in action in the same movie as the Stooges makes a great DVD. Your not a Stooge fan if you don't have Ted Healy and His Stooges DVDs. Be a total Stooge fan and buy these DVDs.

Worth watching twice to find out just what is going on. GOLD RAIDERS. Two films here. A genuine Cowboy film (You already know the plot)and a Three Stooges film. This isn't a criticism they are both worth watching even though the twain rarely meet. Yes - a worthwhile pairing - enjoy! I did.

Meet the Baron/Gold Raiders.

A mixture of early mayhem with their then straight man Ted Healy. The main stars being Jack Pearl who was very big in radio at the time , and Jimmy Durante, following their success in Hollywood Party ,also 1933.The stooges shine in their sketches with some very bad jokes. Also supported by Edna May Oliver and Zasu Pitts. Early Fun. Gold raiders filmed at the end of their careers gives a polished performance from all, with a resonable cast and production values.

2.0 out of 5 stars THE "STOOGES" AREN'T LAUGHING !, December 16, 2006
This review is from: The Three Stooges - Meet the Baron/The Gold Raiders (DVD)
Once again Warner Home Video should be ashamed of themselves for releasing poor quality prints. "Three Stooges" fans will not be laughing over the video and sound quality on this latest DVD release once they plop it into their player. The video transfers are riddled with dirt, debris and scratches making them an absolute nightmare to watch. Meet the Baron is positively the worst of the two films. It's absolutely clear from the opening titles that no restoration went into this Warner release at all and as a Stooges fan I was completely disappointed. I've seen "Three Stooges" shorts released in the public domain that have looked better than this.

DVD Features:

Meet the Baron theatrical trailer only

Subtitles: English, French & Spanish (feature films only)

5.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed it, January 22, 2012

Unlike most reviews I read, I enjoyed seeing Meet the Baron with the early stooges more than the more formulaic Gold Raiders.

Gold Raiders seemed a little more like standard 40's and 50's formula to me. It could have just as easily been an episode of Rin Tin Tin or the Lone Ranger. I did enjoy the stooges, but they seemed a little forced into the story.

Meet the Baron on the other hand was something new to me. It seemed just scarcely removed from vaudeville, and is one of the few opportunities to see the early form of the stooges. Healy and the stooges were of course completely forced into the plot, but as the entire spirit of the film is such a hodgepodge of nonsense, they really fit in well.

I would have been happy with the purchase even without Gold Raiders.
