Book Description

8 and up4 and upThree Stories You Can Read
Why do cats sleep so much? Maybe they are bored. Maybe they cannot think of anything else to do. What if you had to sit inside all day? You might get bored too. You can do a nice thing for your cat - you can read these stories out loud. They are funny stories about things cats think about and things cats like to do, and they have lots of funny pictures. Invite your cat to come hear a story - but ask nicely! Cats hate being told what to do. Sara Swan Miller and True Kelley, author and artist of the highly popular Three Stories You Can Read to Your Dog, have joined forces to prove again that they know what will delight young readers and their pets.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 1^-3. Shy, bold, and feisty by turns, Kelley's cat is positively purrfect as it stalks and capers its way through three episodes that depict a feline's winning ways. Pictures catch a range of emotions--from a sly stare when Kitty sees a tempting bug to a self-satisfied gleam after it has spent a wonderful day doing naughty things. Miller's stories, written using the pronominal you ("One day you [the cat] woke up early"), are funny as well as easy to read, making them great for new chapter-book readers, especially ones who have cats to cozy up with. 5.0 out of 5 stars You can read it to yourself, too!, May 10, 2002

THREE STORIES YOU CAN READ TO YOUR CAT is really three stories: The Rainy Day, The Yummy Bug, The Good Day. The book is obviously meant for kids to read aloud. But you can read it to them, too. And you and the kids can practice "acting" during the dialogue. Each story is separate and complete -- and hilarious! The action captures the cat's personality. And the brightly colored illustrations are really funny. The nameless cat should be called Mischief (another fun thing to do with the child: find names for the cat). This book proves that, to a cat, it's all about the cat. F.Y.I., there's also a "Three Stories You Can Read to Your Dog" book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read aloud book. Fun for all ages & species!, May 20, 1999
By A Customer
A cute idea, well conceived and cleverly executed. I read both the cat book and dog book aloud to a group of elementary students (mixed levels) and it was enjoyed by all. Lots of expression and opportunities for "dramatic reading". Great illustrations add to the delight.

I was as shocked as anyone to discover that cats would appear to enjoy being read to. We have both of Sara's Cat Books, and they even seem to enjoy these two books in particular the most, so yes the rhythm and pace of the punctuation and wording, and expression of the stories told also seems to make a difference, and my Cats are every bit if not more difficult to impress or amuse as anyone elses ! Naturally Children love them even more and both cats and kids get pretty darned engrossed in the whole experience.

I've raised 4 children of my own and we've almost always had many multiple pets, and to be perfectly honest none of which are particularly easy to impress, so any time I can actually do anything right, you had better believe I'll repeat the process as frequently as possible ! ;^) Sara's books are wonderfully illustrated and expressive, and she definitely has a knack for seeing things from a unique point of view, and that is a Magical Quality in any life. Definitely worth the time & expense, and a bold political move for Any Parent or Pet Owner.
