Book Description

1989

One of the most influential and critically acclaimed fantasy writers of all time, Fritz Leiber pioneered the sword-and-sorcery genre! In the ancient city of Lankhmar, two men forge a friendship in battle. The red-haired barbarian Fafhrd left the snowy reaches of Nehwon looking for a new life while the Gray Mouser, apprentice magician, fled after finding his master dead. These bawdy brothers-in-arms cement a friendship that leads them through the wilds of Nehwon facing thieves, wizards, princesses and the depths of their desires and fears. Superb writing and brilliant, believable characterizations highlight the first entry in Leiber's seminal series.About the Author

Fritz Leiber (1910-1992) was equally adept at writing science fiction, fantasy and horror. His works were honored with the Hugo, Nebula and World Fantasy awards. He was named a Grand Master by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and received the Gandalf Grand Master Award for fantasy writing.

Hands down, the best fantasy series ever written. If you have not read this series of 7 books by the author; one more book, volume 8 written by a later author, then you must read these. Very well written, every chapter a new adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine Fantasy, October 17, 2005
This review is from: The Three of Swords: Swords and Deviltry, Swords Against Death, Swords in the Mist (Hardcover)
These were some of the first fantasy stories I read as a kid and I never get tired of rereading them. This author has created a world that, while somewhat old fashioned in its approach to womens roles, is addictive and fun. When I went back and reread these stories a few years ago I was surprised to find that I still loved them and had trouble putting them down. I recommend these stories to anyone wanting a break from the real world and some fun time with old fashioned heros.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gourmet sword and sorcery stories, January 28, 2012
This review is from: The Three of Swords: Swords and Deviltry, Swords Against Death, Swords in the Mist (Hardcover)
Collected here in one cheap, knockabout omnibus are the first three Fafhrd and Gray Mouser books, which are themselves collections of short stories and novellas. The adventures of the amoral duo as they slay, steal, love and lose across the magic-drenched world of Nehwon ("no when" backwards) have probably done more than other work in shaping modern sword & sorcery.

The tales are chronologically arranged in terms of the characters' lives, sometimes directly following one another, sometimes occurring an indeterminate number of years or months apart. They are very carefully written; the stories utterly swim with painstaking detail and are laced heavily with clever dialogue. The packed writing can make the reading a bit slow in parts (for dummies like me, anyway), but it's more than worth it.
