Vampires! In! Space!!!,
By
This review is from: Three Tales (30 Days of Night, ) (Paperback)
The vampire world first defined by Steve Niles during a sunless month in Barrow, Alaska, continues in this book of new stories set in Barrow. Los Angeles and outer space.
"Three Tales" continues the gorefest Niles started in Barrow as he creates and refines a vampire mythos that has nothing to do with the pale and elegant creatures of recent popular fiction. These guys don't sip, they rend, and even their unflagging thirst won't stop them from spilling gallons of blood in the process. by Tom Knapp, Rambles.(net) editor

This collection of 30 Days Of Night is one of the best that I've read so far, as I just recently got into this whole series. These stories provide a good change of setting and plot while still remaining true to the rest of the series. Top notch work, in my opinion.

I love this series. However, when I got the package from Amazon, The book was ripped and had a black Sharpie mark on it along with a barcode sticker that was hard to peel off. I was very surprised and disappointed on how the book was shipped to me considering the description was NEW.

Wow, the last one kinda sucked, huh? Did you think it would just get worse? Have no fear, the talent returns to the series in "Three Tales". I would really call this Two Tales, the first being a story about John Ikos and the second a story about space vampires. The first half is close to excellent due to some returning appearances and a good story. The characters that did return have much better things to say and due, I criticized one of them heavily in a previous volume but he did great here. The closing story about vampires in space has its pros and cons. The great thing about it is its originality and stellar pacing, however it has some plot problems. Steve Niles may have wanted me to guess how the commander of the space shuttle got infected. He left no real evidence that a contraction of the vampire disease occured. Hello? A bite or a scratch maybe? No, someone just happens to walk on the ship with the vampire flu. Yes, I saw the woman in the bar, but Niles needs to be clear when conveying information. This problem is certainly why I give the book 4 stars. I couldn't stop thinking about that plothole as soon as I was done with the book.
Come in with decent expectations and you'll get decent results. It's not amazing, and it doesn't really compare to the first three volumes, but if you want a little more, this is a little more. Hopefully Niles will give us groundbreaking stuff in the future, but until then we have these simple fun stories in the meantime. |
