5.0 out of 5 stars Lucky me I have this record September 25, 2004
By Jazzcat
Format:Audio CD
In these weeks I'm buying a lot of limited edition OJCs to complete my collection (if having a complete Jazz discography is a reachable goal). So I put my hands on this one too and I'm lucky enough to be the first person who is able to say something about it to you. Well. First thing I want to say is that I don't understand why all the best OJCs are all limited edition... Ok, in this way they can price them a little higher but let's call them a "gold edition" but why limit them? It's ridicolous. All the best are limited .. bah. Let's go on talking about "Three trumpets", don't waste our time thinking about marketing people ...

If you're reading this review chances are that you already know who are these three trumpets. Art Farmer, Donald Byrd, Idrees Sulieman. What the cover does not say is which are the other guys. I'll tell you (will you give me your vote? Please! Do you see how hard I work to give you precious informations??.. just joking guys!). Well the other guys are Ed Thigpen drums, Addison Farmer double bass (Art's brother) and Hod O'brien sits at the piano. The program consists in five tunes. What kind of music is it? Well guys, this is a blowing date. A fantastic blowing date I have to add. It is recorded very very well, instruments are very clear and the balance is absolutly correct. The first tune is a major blues up tempo by Sulieman's pen, not fast but up. The second tune is a Farmer's anatoll or rhythmn changes If you prefer. This one is played fast. Great solos all around, you can't go wrong here. You have three of the best trumpet players of the fifties challenging each other. Great, great music!! Impeccable Jazz! If you pay attention enough you will be able to recognize the players even if they are all very technical!

5.0 out of 5 stars If You Like Trumpets September 2, 2006
By A Fan
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I second the other reviewer'comments. Each of these three trumpeters seem to be hyped by their associates. The attack of each is crisp and aggressive and there is a feeling of intensity. I can't think of any cracked or muffed notes - just straight ahead bop trumpeting. Each soloist has plenty of room to show their stuff and uses it effectively. Recommended.
