Book Description

August 15, 2007
If history is the version of events that people have decided to agree upon, what happens to the alternative versions, the lost facts, the unacknowledged motives? In her compelling collection, Three Versions of the Truth, award-winning author Amy Knox Brown explores history¿s impact on the lives of modern-day Midwesterners. These stories zero in on the place where truth and desire collide and examine characters who are forced to make hard choices about the stories they tell themselves.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

As its title suggests, the duplicitous nature of relationships—with lovers, family, friends, but most importantly, with one's own inner demons—is explored in all its tangled perplexity in Brown's vibrant debut collection of short stories set in her native Nebraska. As level on the page as the quintessential Great Plains landscape, Brown nonetheless reveals the dramatic peaks and valleys hidden within the interior terrain of her striking cast of everyday characters. From the college professor whose career takes a nosedive only to be saved by the publication of an ersatz self-help book in "Dr. Faustus in Lincoln" to the young woman contemplating the loss of a girlhood friendship in "Why We Are the Way We Are," Brown's protagonists are a preternaturally introspective lot, but their philosophical meditations make for revelatory reading. With fictional interludes of historical significance sprinkled throughout the collection like palate-cleansing dollops of sorbet, Brown serves up a savory homage to the place she calls home and to its myriad inhabitants. Haggas, Carol

5.0 out of 5 stars Is history truth?, December 5, 2007
This review is from: Three Versions of the Truth (Paperback)
Is history truth? No -- but given a range of different persepectives of any given event, and then you may approach what is true. Kurosawa did it with Rashomon. Amy Knox Brown approaches this conceit in Three Versions of the Truth in a manner uniquely her own, crystalline in spirit and sparsely beautiful to the ear. The collection alters between long stories and short. The short pieces are brief yet richly textured. Of the longer pieces, I loved "Ray Sips a Low Quitter" -- it's a simmering story of a reckless, drunken affair between two smart people who should know better, a comparison of laws written and not and the price one pays for just standing close to the dangerous things in life that are so shiny and attractive. Another favorite was "The Slave Trade" in which Brown deftly illustrates the fragile threads that form the allegiences of our lives, the competing forces that pull on, and in the end, define us. Well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Talented Writer, October 5, 2007

This review is from: Three Versions of the Truth (Paperback)
I just ordered this book and I can't wait to read it. I know Amy Knox Brown personally and have read many of her stories and a large amount of her novel. Her characters endure hardships in beautifully lamenting ways and we get to know them through her laconic lense. She brings you so close to her characters, that you feel uneasy, like you're spying on them from inside their closet. I don't know about the stories in this piece of work, but my money is on them being deliciously dry and genuine. Go Amy.
