I was devastated!,
By
This review is from: Three Wishes (Hardcover)
This was a beautifully written and enjoyable book, until the tragic ending almost blew me away. 'Three Wishes' could have rated 5 stars in my opinion, but I was so devastated by the conclusion that I couldn't even cry, and it ruined the whole book for me! I read for entertainment and for a temporary escape from reality, and I wanted this story to have a 'happily ever after' ending. It didn't. As much as I have always enjoyed reading Barbara Delinsky, I'm quite sure I will hesitate before I buy or read another of her books.

I Felt Cheated,
By A Customer
This review is from: Three Wishes (Hardcover)
Although I've enjoyed all the Barbara Delinsky novels I have read, I truly felt cheated on this one. The story was absorbing and sweet, up until the last few chapters, at which point I was thrown through a loop, given a tragic ending that I really was not expecting. The ending was so devestating that I was angry enough where I had trouble getting through the last pages. I felt angry and cheated after reading a story that begins with hope and optimism that ends quite the opposite. So, if, like me, you read for escapism and happy endings, I would not recommend you read this book. The ending destroyed everything about the story that I loved prior to the ending.

Wishing for a different plot,

The title and the town intreagued me, but the storyline was poor and way too much misery for an escapism novel. Think Nicholas Sparks, then take away his straight forward manner and add some purple prose and you have Three Wishes.

sad ending,
By A Customer
This review is from: Three Wishes Cassette (Audio Cassette)
Any romance with a sad ending gets thumbs down from me. Real life has enough sad endings - if I pay for a romance book, I want a happy ending. And how about some sparks? The main characters don't fire enough romantic sparks to light a small campfire.

book ended on a depressing note,
By A Customer
This review is from: Three Wishes (Mass Market Paperback)
Although most of this book was pretty good, by the end I was in tears. I felt that there were several different options the author could have pursued rather that the one that she did (for the ending). It has been 3 days since I finished it, and I am still bothered by the climax of the book. Perhaps I shouldn't have had the wine with the book...

Could have been good story but it stumbles at the end...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Three Wishes (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a story of a small town in Vermont with the usual spectrum of interesting characters. Bree is a small-town girl waiting for something out-of-the-ordinary to happen. Tom Gates is a guy from the big city who is about to be offered the opportunity to atone for past sins. Ms. Delinsky does a good job of showing us what small-town Vermont can be like. The ending, however, I found disappointing and trite and distasteful. The author doesn't seem to have much affection for these characters. I'd stick with some of her earlier works, like Fingerprints and Moment to Moment.

This review is from: Three Wishes (Mass Market Paperback)
Of all the books I have read in my life (33 yrs old, married, mom of 2), this has to be one of the BEST books that I have EVER read. The book has a wonderful story line of hope, love, friendship, and compassion. It is truely a MUST READ book for any woman who enjoys just a "Good Story" book. ALso try reading Coast Road- another GREAT Barbara Delinsky story!

Bittersweet Love Story,
By "klpepsi" (Indiana) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Three Wishes (Mass Market Paperback)
While walking home one evening during a raging snowstorm, waitress Bree Miller is struck by a vehicle skidding out of control on the icy road. The vehicle's driver is renowned author, Tom Gates, who has just moved to the small Vermont town to take stock of his life tainted by fame. Tom accompanies Bree to the hospital, and remains with her during her recovery there, and eventually at home. Bree has no family to speak of, and her dreams of a home, a man to love, and family, appear to be within her grasp in the form of Tom. Eventually, she confides in him of her out-of-body experience, during the time her heart had stopped after the accident. She saw a white light, full of love, which once revived; she felt this entity had given her three wishes. The only thing is, she thinks there's a possibility she may die again once her wishes are fulfilled. This was my first book to read by this author, and so far I haven't read any of her other work. It was a very well written and compelling story, with interesting, multi-faceted characters. In fact, I could hardly put the book down, because I kept wondering how it would end. The reason I haven't read anything else by this author, as good as she is, is because it was an emotionally draining story for me, full of bittersweet moments. My reading preference leans more toward romantic comedies or sweet, romantic love stories. If you don't mind quite a bit of sadness in your romance reads, then this is probably the book for you.

Boring; a big disappointment,
By maureen@birman.com (MA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Three Wishes (Hardcover)
I looked forward eagerly to reading Delinsky's
latest book. She hooked me on "Fingerprints"
and some of her earlier works. This books was
lackluster and dull. The characters lack depth
and the story is, well boring. Barbara, go back
to some of your earlier books and give us some
more like Heart of the Night. Take a lesson from
Diane Chamberlain, an excellent author, who writes
in the same genre, but holds the reader's attention.

Get ready to cry,
By A. Wilson (Boston) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Three Wishes (Mass Market Paperback)
Yes, this book is a definite tear jerker and the author makes no apologies for it. However, the characters are believable and you want them to find a hapy ending. This is the story of a small town waitress who finds love with a writer, who she is meets when they are involved in an accident. The main female lead almsot dies as a result of the accident and comes back to life believing she has been given 3 wishes. But what happens after she uses them up. I found this book sad, but not maudlin at all. The characters refuse to feel sorry for themselves and they engross the reader in the journey for love and salvation. This is one of my Delinsky favorites.
