From Library Journal
Walcott has written a triptych of plays about Trinidad. The Last Carnival , a completely rewritten version of In a Fine Castle , shows a fine poetic technique but a primitive dramatic one. Things happen and characters change much too fast. Beef, No Chicken , a farce, is the best of the three. It has a good blend of the lyric and the comic while still making points about development in the Third World. A Branch of the Blue Nile , a play about a provincial acting company, has a much better dramatic structure than The Last Carnival , even if the lyricism sometimes stops its momentum. Walcott is a well-known poet, if not dramatist, which should create a market for this collection. Stephen A. Fulchino, Medford P.L., Mass.
