Best Hammerfall album in the last few years....,
By
This review is from: Threshold (Audio CD)
Last year Hammerfall's 'Chapter V' album was good but not quite as good as it's predecessor 'Crimson Thunder.' Now with 'Threshold' Hammerfall is back to what we expect from them & more! This album is rockin' track after track & it doesn't seem to get old. Don't pass this up if you're a diehard fan!

I'm a huge fan of Hammerfall's first two albums, but I stopped following the band after Renegade which I felt was disapointing. I picked up the newest Hammerfall release just to see what they've been up to lately since I hadn't purchased their last two albums Crimson Thunder or Chapter 5.
This album isn't all bad. A few tracks such as Genocide, Fire Burns, and Natural High are good, but this is nowhere near a solid effort as their earlier material such as Legacy of Kings and Glory to the Brave. For me Hammerfall is a band of A level musicians who are currently writing C level music. My advice to fans who are considering getting into Hammerfall would be to skip this album and pick up Legacy of Kings instead which is their greatest album.

The mighty Templars return with their best album since "Crimson Thunder". Matter of fact this ranks right up there with "Crimson Thunder" as my second favorite HammerFall disc to date. Only "Legacy Of Kings" can top it. This has much more passion and energy than their last album (which frankly was a bit bland). This album roars with a fire that will keep Hammerfall's legacy solid in the history of heavy metal music. Some songs aren't quite as catchy as on past albums but in a way that is a good thing. It's like they have infused this with a new dose of heavieness that has not really been present on any previous HammerFall release. Check out the first single, "Natural High", to hear what I am talking about. Not only is the overall feeling from the music darker than before but the lyrics seem to be a bit darker as well. Don't get me wrong, the anthemic sing along choruses are still there just not in a way that overwhelms the listener. Fans who thought their earlier material was just a bit too cheesy might do well to consider this new effort from a seasoned band. The production is stellar and adds to the greatness of this album.
What you get here is no compromise balls to the wall heavy metal. Influenced by bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, HammerFall take the classic power metal genre to the next level. My actual rating is 4 and 1/2 stars.

This IS power metal!,

These Swedish power-metallers are not quite as fast as Helloween, not quite as loud as Manowar, not quite as spaced-out as Gamma Ray, and not quite as bizarre as the Dungeons & Dragon themed fair (or is it Lord of the Rings now?). However, Threshold is the perfect balance of thunderous drums, monstrous guitars, enduring melodies, and powerful vocals. This IS power metal!

Typical HammerFall...but very average at best,

I've been a fan of HammerFall for about 7 or 8 years now and I have to say that there's nothing too impressive about this album. It's still good power metal, but it sounds very much the same as Chapter V or Crimson Thunder. Personally, I think each of their albums after Renegade have gotten worse...more predictable, very basic drum work, etc. Worth a listen or 2, but nothing that stands out here. If you're interested in this band, stick with getting Glory To The Brave or Legacy Of Kings before anything else.

I love this whole album, and I recommend it to everybody that is looking for power metal/hard rock. But for the beginner, I would recommend to start with Legacy of Kings and Renegade. These albums are phenomenal! Joacim Cans has a very melodic voice, he is a very good lyricist, years of training can tell that and he's voice is so much apart from other singers, just amazing, when you look at him you would not think that he can sing so good, yet slow and clear not raspy and not understandeble. Another band that I think will follow in their shoes are Dionysus, the lead singer did the baking vocals on Legacy Of Kings, and he works with Joacim Cans on more projects. Sonata Arctica is another band that has very good influences yet they are different from other bands. Please disregards the negative comments on this album, the band is very good, this album when was released in Europe, especially in Sweden was released at number 1 and stay in top for the next few weeks. This did not happened since Roxette years ago, so this should say something, plus Sweden loves them a lot. This year Hammerfall is celebrating 10 years and they are releasing a new the best of... cd in October I think, I can't wait! So stay tuned, the band got a new very good bass player and there is more to come!

Long Awaited and Highly Anticipated,

A good album, indeed, however a little more 'commercialized' than I had anticipated. Every band that has found fame and a future in the music industry is expected to release an album that defies their roots - to dip in the commercial arena - and I believe this album is the one where HammerFall dips.
Overall, the album is tight: good song-writing, excellent riffs and powerful rythms. A lot more background vocals in this one over their previous releases, but the vocals are well blended and truly enhance the album. The album was only released today so I'm sure it will continue to grow on me. Honest judgement: this album parallels Chapter 5: Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken and is far better in quality over their debut albums. A must-have for HammerFall fans, of course - and for any serious metal fan.. considering some of the other junk out there that claims to be 'metal'. |
