5.0 out of 5 stars Sounds familiar but way better, February 25, 2004
This review is from: Thresholds (Audio CD)
Well...if you take Death's "Human", Cynic's "Focus", and a little Yngwie Malmsteen and mix it together and record a cd based off that, you will undoubtedly get Nocturnus' "Thresholds". I can't even begin to describe this cd. The drums are fast and change speed, the keyboards are OUTSTANDING, the bass is good, but what really stands out from most death metal bands are the razor sharp guitars. The solos, harmonies, rhythm, all are there and pack a punch. I am almost going to say this is progressive but Dream Theater makes that term sound ambigously OVERDONE. I can't believe I waited until 13 years after it came out to get it. A MUST HAVE for any metal fan.

Wow! I see why it was so hard to get a copy of this. It's beyond great..and has become one of my personal fave albums of all time! Nocturnus really shows their talents in the epic piece of pure brilliance...the keyboards, drumming, and guitar work are almost unbeaten by any other Death metal band....this is a superior album! No regrets. Thresholds is definitely Nocturnus' best album and one of the best death metal cds period..and in one song the echoing effect of the vocalist voice gives it a cool cerebral sound and the sci-fi subject matter makes for an interesting listen...try to find this baby..you'll love it! It's a shame this band only has 3 albums I know of..I want more! Thresholds is good..it's darn good....pure brilliance! Will not dissapoint!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Death Metal records ever!, June 29, 2001
This review is from: Thresholds (Audio CD)
No joke. From the underrated, seldom heard (but often heard of) band, comes this total mind-blowing epic masterpiece of sound and fury. Each song is intricately constructed, full of amazing riffs executed with technical precision. This recording is just an incredible image-inducing barrage of heavy guitars, solos, and eerie keyboard cuts; the songs flow together to create a constant story of demon-robots, unholy science and magical machinery - man, it causes the imagination to come to life. Every song is great, especially Climate Contoller, Aquatica, Subterranean Infiltrator and Tribal Vodoun. Nocturnus is truly original, getting away from that over-used satanic mumbo-jumbo that is so common, and going with a science-fiction, cerebral assault. It's cool. Pick it up.

5.0 out of 5 stars You can find the source material..., June 11, 2011
This review is from: Thresholds (Audio CD)
I was really annoyed at the fact that this album, probably the best death metal album EVER, was not more widely available. It is long out of print on disk, and any secondhand copy will cost you a small fortune. I checked everywhere, and could not find it for under 50 dollars. I won't waste my time reviewing how good the music is here-others have done that, and it is all true. The problem is getting your hands on it, without paying out your last paycheck, which is tough, especially in this economy.
Anyhow, you CAN get it without paying a ton of money. Run a search online for the group, album name, and include the word 'download'. Trust me-you WILL get results! Just download the files, and burn it onto your own disk. It may take a bit of file converting, I briefly got held up by my inability to open a zip file, but there are ways around that. Remember, you can convert audio files that are specific to the user system to mp3 for free. Either way, you can get this album, one of the gems of the 90's death metal scene, and not break your bank account in the process. What a shame to have to do this anyhow, just because some record label will not re-release the material. A big 'hmphy hmphy hmph!' to Earache and Relativity Records for not making this album available anymore!
PS if you get it, and are bothered by the sound going in and out a bit on the song 'Nocturne in Bm', don't be bothered, it is part of the track. I have the original cassette, and the sound did the same thing on that one also. I don't know why the heck they did that-it is a good track, but I would have left that out. It kinda sounds like that track was recorded through one of those old Leslie rotating speakers (which have since been replaced by flange pedals). Either way-this album is unreal, and worth the effort to find it.
