My first reaction to the book was that it was much to small to include any useful information. Once I started reading I realized the book was jammed pack with good information for the up and coming author.

I just finished reading a review copy of "Launching Your Book without Losing Your Mind," by Gail Z. Martin.

What a pleasant experience that was! Martin has given us an excellent overview of the book launching process. She writes with the author (and perhaps the self publisher) in mind and provides an easy-to-read summary of what a book launch involves. Martin covers the complexities of the process in a frank but encouraging manner. Beginning and experienced authors alike will find this book more than informative.

One of the really useful features of the book is the list of "assignments" at the back of each short chapter. Authors who follow the steps Martin outlines will be well prepared to stage a successful book launch.

"Launching Your Book without Losing Your Mind" is also a needed "wake-up call" for authors who think their work is done once the book is written. It says many of the things I tell my clients when they are planning their book's future, and it includes a number of points that I don't believe I've ever seen in any similar book. For example, when she discusses spin-off products based on the cover, such as posters and tee shirts, Martin reminds us to be sure we have the right to create such derivative products.

Perhaps the next edition will include mention of the Writer's Guild, the Independent Book Publishers Association, and other author and publisher support organizations. The current edition is a valuable resource in spite of their omission. Writers and self publishers will find "Launching Your Book without Losing Your Mind" to be a valuable and useful resource.

5.0 out of 5 stars Launching Your Books is a Treasure Trove for Authors!, October 31, 2010

This review is from: The Thrifty Author's Guide to Launching Your Books Without Losing Your Mind (Thrifty Author's Guides) (Paperback)
Gail Z. Martin's book, The Thrifty Author's Guide: Launching Your Book Without Losing Your Mind, is truly a treasure trove of information that every author should read. If I were teaching in a classroom setting, I would make it required reading for every aspiring author. Ms. Martin opens with letting the author know it is their responsibility to get the book marketed and sold. I wish I read this sage advice years ago. The reader then finds insight on the required marketing plan and a logical and orderly layout for the beginning to advanced steps for launching their book. The guide begins with six months prior to launch all the way through the time period of six months after the launch. Every reader is bound to gleefully capture information previously not known for marketing and selling books. I read The Thrifty Author's Guide cover to cover and am still in the process of implementing every step myself. The content value is infinite!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finishing Your Book Is Just The Beginning..., April 19, 2010
By
This review is from: The Thrifty Author's Guide to Launching Your Books Without Losing Your Mind (Thrifty Author's Guides) (Paperback)
More than 250,000 new books are printed and published every year - in the U.S. alone. With so many different offerings to choose from, just how do authors expect to make their titles stand out from the crowd and become the books that everyone is talking about?

Throughout the pages of Launching Your Book Without Losing Your Mind, Gail Martin sets out to show you how to do just that. Herself an experienced author and publishing entrepreneur, Martin has amassed a wealth of knowledge over the course of promoting her books worldwide, and in Launching Your Book Without Losing Your Mind, she shares her considerable wisdom and insight for the benefit of members of the literary world at-large. Touching on a vast range of different topics, including everything from forming a street team to employing a Virtual Assistant to exploring subsidiary rights, Martin's helpful guidebook is just what writers of all backgrounds and genres need in order to better promote their writings - whether they be first-time novelists or seasoned literary pros. Furthermore, Martin doesn't waste time expounding on theoretical techniques that may or may not yield tangible results, but rather highlights proven, established methods of generating greater publicity for books of all types.

As any publishing industry veteran knows, finishing a book is only the beginning; if authors ever expect to increase their readership and celebrate their writings on a grand scale, constant strategic promotion is the key. With Launching Your Book Without Losing Your Mind, Gail Martin has crafted an invaluable resource for anyone who aspires to more than simply seeing their words in print. A thoroughly informative, highly recommended read.
