About the Author

Anne Wiens is by day a mild-mannered announcer and program director for radio stations in Shelby, Montana, a small town almost literally a hundred miles from anywhere. Her mother, grandmothers and great-grandmother were all accomplished needlewomen, and between them, made sure her two sisters and she learned how to sew, knit, crochet, embroider, etc. As a result, quilting became Anne's passion.

Anne has been making quilts since 1974, designing nearly as long, and has been teaching professionally since 1992 in local adult education programs and through her local quilt shop. Many of her original patterns were designed to teach various tools and techniques.

I started quilting only about 2 years ago even though I've sewn for decades, and I have to say I'm not the least bit thrifty or even care about thriftiness. I used to either toss any leftover fabric or send it to my sister-in-law because I'd be sick of it by the time I was done with a quilt. I can't even remember where I read about Anne, probably on Facebook, but her concept to cut the leftovers in specific shapes is brilliant! I must confess, I only do the 3.5" blocks and 2.5", 4.5" and 5.5" strips which I'll cut down later for patterns. You can pull a scrappy together really fast, and she has a good method of storing and using those pieces. Definitely get this!

I like it very much, you cut your scraps into 6 different sizes, store them by size in shoeboxes or container of choice. then there a lot of patterns to choose from to make blocks. I should be able to reduce cloth stash by doing this. I think this is a great organizer for fabric, especially pieces smaller than one yard. It will be easier to make scrappy quilts, as you would just get the sizes you need for block .

I had seen Anne's blog and Facebook page before buying the book and had a good idea of how it all works.
This is a very simple system for quilters who love the idea of scrap quilts but need some guidance as to how to get them in a usable system.
The books has a section of how to cut pieces so that they are ready for the next section which gives a very nice assortment of blocks. Anne is very good at explaining how it all works and I find her directions easy to follow and very do-able.
The only thing I think could have been improved was more examples of actual quilts or even mock ups of quilts with the blocks.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who has more scraps than she knows what to do with and also for those who do charity/and service to others (ie Project Linus) quiltmaking.

Obviously written by someone who is a quilter of great expertise with a great degree of experience. Instructions were clearly communicated.

Great idea on using scraps cut in specific sizes. When you collect enough you make a quilt. No clutter and no waste. I'm cutting up anything smaller than a fat quarter and will have an organized stash for a project that takes up little room as I keep the different sizes in zip-lock bags.

This book has the system to organize scraps by size so you won't waste any fabric. Almost like getting two quilts for one -- the one you pay for and the almost free one.

The book is only printed on a color copier. This is supposed to be an "amazing system for cutting and using scraps". The patterns shown are all standard patterns that any beginner quilter can make without the book. Definitely not worth the money, I returned the book.

I was initially disappointed that this book was small and not very professional looking. However, it is just right for its purpose, which is to tell one how to plan for using scraps and making something with them when the mood hits.
