I was very disappointed with this book. Living in RI and being a friend of Amy's mother, I was sorry that it was such an amateur attempt to describe such a horrific crime. The typos drove me crazy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Well Done!, June 29, 2008
This review is from: Thrill Killers: A True Story of Innocence and Murder Without Conscience (Hardcover)
One of the best true crime books I've read in years. Thrill Killers tells the story of a small town police department and a tragic high profile double murder. The lead detective puts the reader in his head and into the criminal investigation and trials of five murderers. The senseless act is made all the more real as the book delves beyond the dramatic headlines and introduces the reader to the two victims and their families. As you read the book, the connection you feel toward them will provoke strong emotions. Even if you wanted to put this one down, you won't be able to.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well documented and sensitive account of brutal murders, July 2, 2008
This review is from: Thrill Killers: A True Story of Innocence and Murder Without Conscience (Hardcover)
The authors of this book most certainly did their research on this horrific event. Anyone who lives in RI or Massachusetts will remember this crime as it touched all of us. The author(s) did a wonderful job capturing the emotional impact these senseless murders had not only to their families/friends but to the detective on the scene. I felt a connection to not only Amy & Jason, but to the detective as well and although I knew the ending, I did not visualize the many details found in this book until I read the book. No other publication brought this story to true form the way Thrill Killers did.

I recommend this book to anyone who reads true crime stories to not only understand a piece of the sick puzzle, but, to also feel a connection to the innocent people forever affected by evil senselessness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chilling True Story, September 26, 2008
This review is from: Thrill Killers: A True Story of Innocence and Murder Without Conscience (Hardcover)
The book details the events up to and after the murder of two innocent people. I was at times sad, angry and scared while I read the book. Being local made it all the more chilling. I recommend the book to anyone that wants to read a good true crime drama.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrill Killers, July 5, 2008
This review is from: Thrill Killers: A True Story of Innocence and Murder Without Conscience (Hardcover)
Thrill Killers was a fascinating, behind the scenes look at a senseless crime which originated in Providence, RI. The true story was told by the detective on the case and offers a look at the under-belly of Providence, RI. The story not only provided an inside look at this heinous crime committed by five losers, but I truly felt sorry for the victims and the pain suffered by their families.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT AND EXCELLENT!, July 20, 2008
This review is from: Thrill Killers: A True Story of Innocence and Murder Without Conscience (Hardcover)
Being closer to this than most people because I knew Amy briefly and being from R.I. I felt closer to the horror more then most readers would. I followed the story from the beginning with disgust and vengeance enveloping me. Reading this book brought back those same feelings.
The photos are as disturbing now as they were then. Great job.

2.0 out of 5 stars Misleading Title, March 2, 2008
By
This review is from: Thrill Killers: A True Story of Innocence and Murder Without Conscience (Hardcover)
This is a farily well written account of the murder of two innocents by a group of dysfunctional thugs. The title made me expect that the book was going to be about various killings by individuals who murdered for the thrill of it (such murders do occur). However it was as mentioned above about one specifice murder incident. What is more confusing is that these killings would not even fall within the category of a "thrill killing". The two individuals appear to have been killed so that the thugs could not be identified as the group that kidnapped and robbed them.

3.0 out of 5 stars Senseless Loss of Life for Cheap Thrills!, April 15, 2009
Okay, this book was satisfactory and told by the law enforcement point of view who investigated the case involving a double homicide of Amy Shute and Jason Burgeson. After the arrest of the five young men involved with long criminal histories, I got bored and tired of reading it but I did finish it. The beginning was strong but it weakened after the murders. Sadly nothing can bring back two young human beings who were killed simply for $18, a car, and maybe a place among the criminal elite. Now five men are paying for their stupidity with their lives. Of course, the reader should know how these five criminals came to be in the first place. Still, the book is an okay read and it's a sad story about five young men who would be free if they had let Jason and Amy live. Their fateful decision cost them their freedom and the families of the victims nothing but heartbreak. For Jason and Amy, they did nothing to earn such a vicious ending to their short lives. Their families are still hurting by the system and the lack of faith in the world around them. For the five young criminals whose personal histories remain mysterious, we don't really know what caused them to do such a foolish act in the first place. This book is about one of the most savage crimes in recent history about five young men who got their kicks and thrills by preying on the innocent but went too far and quickly got caught. They weren't as smart as they thought they were and now must pay for ultimate price. I don't think the death penalty works anymore anyway. For the families of the victims, they know that Jason and Amy's killers will spend their remainder of their lives probably in prison. It's such a sad story with no happy endings for anybody.

This review is from: Thrill Killers: A True Story of Innocence and Murder Without Conscience (Hardcover)
Negatives: misleading title; cheap/bad cover art; typographical errors throughout the book.

Positives: good account from police perspective of what happened and the various processes involved to catch and convict the criminals.

General comment: will be of interest to people familiar with the territory and case (mainly Rhode Islanders.)
