5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent mix of rock, jungle, industrial
Tin Star have actally done what the hypesters claim Underworld and the Low-Fidelity All Stars have accomplished: take elements from the worlds of electronica and synthesized them with rock and roll. While Underworld (which is still fantastic) tends to be dance music first with a little rock and the Lo-Fi All Stars get tripped up in their own pyrotechnics, Tin Star...

3.0 out of 5 stars Some good songs, Some okay, Some just boring
I don't know... "Head","Disconnected Child", and "Viva" are great, even excellent songs. There are a couple other good tracks too. But about half the songs are way too slow for my tastes. If you like techno, this is a great CD, but if you are looking for more rockin' stuff like "Head", i'm sorry, but this is not for you.

Tin Star have actally done what the hypesters claim Underworld and the Low-Fidelity All Stars have accomplished: take elements from the worlds of electronica and synthesized them with rock and roll. While Underworld (which is still fantastic) tends to be dance music first with a little rock and the Lo-Fi All Stars get tripped up in their own pyrotechnics, Tin Star seems to have gotten the mix right. On the industrial-sounding "Head," the trippy "Disconnected Child" and the anthemic "Viva!," Tin Star rock with the best of them. But its on their slower, more melodic songs that Tin Star prove they know how to craft a song and not just find good grooves. "Wonderful World" spins out with melody and rhythm, with a kick ass pitter-patter jungle beat to boot. "Rain Check" and the beautiful "Don't Say" are songs to play while with your girlfriend, something that you certainly couldn't do with, say, industrial nonsense from Filter, Stabbing Westward or the other NIN rip-offs. This is a diverse album that shows great songs don't need to come straight from any particular genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars The last hope for modern music?, May 27, 2001

Tin Star's, "The Thrill Kisser," is a wonderful mix of techno, jungle, pop, jazz, and rock. While others attempt the mixture, no band out there today has anything close to Tin Star's sound. From the upbeat Head, to the melancholy Destruction, "The Thrill Kisser" really delivers. The cd moves at a nice clip, begining fast, and slowing down toward the end. Initally, I only listened to the dancy VIVA! and Disconnected Child, but after about 2 months in my cd rotation, I began skipping over thoes tracks and absorbing the likes of the mellow, though thoroughly enjoyable, Wonderful World and Picture of a Girl. The mood they set is like no other. This is a beautiful cd. I wholeheartedly recomend it to any fan of pop, rock, jazz, techno, jungle, or house. An amazing compilation from one of the new masters of synth. Here's hoping their new album, The American, is just as good!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Mix of Both Techno & Rock, July 2, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Thrill Kisser (Audio CD)
I bought this CD primarily because of the hype involved with the group's more popular song entitled "Head." However, there are songs on the CD that top "Head." The songs include a variety of songs ranging from upbeat tunes resembling techno to slower songs. As most CDs this one has a few weak songs as most CDs do. The other songs certainly make up for the weaker. It's a much better CD than I had expected and I highly reccomend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Silly old fool nods head, June 29, 2000

There I was, pottering through the record store dredging the Blues shelf for something for a lazy weekend when I realised I was tapping my pocket-change, nodding my silly old head & feeling a Saturday night tingle on a tedious Friday lunchtime. The rhythyms on the moving-about-quickly tracks are infectious; David Tomlinson's thin, melancholy vocals sound more earnest than the lyrics really deserve but they nevertheless lounge beautifully over the slow buzzing of the bass and are guaranteed to encourage an indulgent, louche weekend.

Tin Star's cd "The Thrill Kisser" is simply that - a wonderful collection of mature, well-arranged pop. Though "Head" would seem to be the standout track, I found myself drawn to the ruminating sadnes of "Raincheck;" the barbed delivery of "Going Slow;" and the jaded romanticism of "Wonderful World." This is a smart release for smart listeners looking for more than standard hooks and a catchy chorus.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprise, June 7, 1999

I have to admit, I bought this CD because the song "Head" just utterly, completely rocks. I don't know if it makes me want to drive with the top down or just dance on a table. Anyway, I expected the rest of the CD to be a throwaway, but boy was I surprised. The rest of the CD was actually a great mix of mellow bottom-heavy grooves, rapidfire techno, and some songs that flat out made me want to play this when a date is over. Good job!

This is an excellent CD and much better than the usual drek out there. I'm amazed that so many people don't like it, but then, take a look at what's popular today.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Chance that Paid off...., January 31, 2000
This review is from: Thrill Kisser (Audio CD)
I bought this on the strength of "Head," which had been getting a lot of radio airplay at the time, and I was very pleasantly surprised. Very seldom has an album bought because of one song turned out to be good, but this was excellent. It has its weak spots, as any album will, but the strengths more than compensate. Songs like "Raincheck" and "Destruction" have a slow, insular tone to them, as opposed to others such as "Viva" with its Anrgy Youth feel that is dangerous to drive to.... These guys are relatively obscure, but a very worthwhile buy....
