Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This sound, solid book of health advice for women begins in a rather original way with a chapter on personality types--because how women deal with stress and health depends on their personalities. That's a refreshing change from the usual one-size-fits-all health book for women, and it helps this one stand out from the pack. Another strength is the book's up-to-the-minute medical advice; Carter, a pediatrician, lays out recent medical studies, debunks fads and upsets a few apple carts. There are surprises: some orange sodas and root beers have as much caffeine as espresso (who knew?), and chocolate may be good for you (thank heavens). Carter's advice is sensible, particularly as she encourages a balanced eating plan combined with regular exercise or offers sobering information on heart disease. The writing can be tedious, however; Carter's enthusiasm is signaled by unrestrained exclamation points, and the prose tries too hard at puns and gimmicky phrases. ("Make no bones about it, you need calcium," she notes in the chapter on nutrition.) Throughout, the book offers strong Christian content and well-integrated ideas about how faith relates to health.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference and Consumer Advocate, March 18, 2003

Dr. Carter has done her research well and written a book useful for every woman of any faith. Some of the topics addressed include stress management (did you know that stress can deposit fat directly onto your abdominal area?), proper nutrition, heart disease and menopause, nutritional supplements (the safe upper limits are enumerated), toxins in household cleaners, weight gain and loss, exercise and being a wise consumer--all with a good sense of humor. I learned some surprising facts about bottled water and chocolate and am planning to update my store of cleaning products. Name brands of recommended products and organizations encompassing areas from nutrition to weight loss and fitness programs are generously provided, as well as resources for further information. Dr. Carter writes clearly and concisely, addressing in one neat package every topic of concern to women. This book should be in the hands of every woman I know.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loaded with great tips!, August 27, 2003

Yes, the key to this book is Lifestyle Change. This book drew me into it when I flipped to the first chapter. It was all about stress! We all have stress so we all can relate! We are deal with it differently. Stress from the viewpoint of different personalities shows you why you react the way you do.

This positive, upbeat book enourages the reader to decide that now is the time for change. There is much discussion on nutrition and weight control and exercise. This book is loaded with tips to make the necessary changes for optimum health.

Ever wish you had a friend who was a doctor?

"Thrive!" is the perfect answer -- Dr. Carrie Carter demystifies the myriad of health issues with an encouraging, compassionate voice.

Supported by the most current research, this information packed book is warmly accessible -- a "real woman's" guide loaded with practical strategies to balance and enhance busy lives... love the "one minute workout" in the exercise chapter! Dr. Carrie Carter engagingly addresses topics ranging from "the coffee question" to reducing fear over screening tests. I especially appreciate her chapter on stress reduction and find her suggestions easy to incorporate and extremely effective.

Informative, uplifting and inspiring, this book is a joy to read -- and a must have resource!
