Review

As we sit at the dawn of the Internet age and a new millennium to boot, full service brokers might be tempted to join many voices who tell us their services will no longer be needed in this brave new world of e-commerce. Not Tom Dorsey! He has written a superb book for rookies and veterans alike that re-visits some of the very basics of our industry and finds new life for the financial services professional. Read his book. You'll be glad you did - Because your services are more necessary than ever -- Bill Good, Chairman, Bill Good Marketing, Inc. And Author of Prospecting Your Way to Sales Success

This book ...begins where it should - with relationships. It emphasizes the absolute basics of loving the business, establishing a solid game plan, and being willing to work hard - all of which is rooted in understanding risk. This wonderful book ends with the best advice of all - timing your purchases and sales and buying on pullbacks -- Ralph J. Acampora, CMT Managing Director & Director of Technical Research, Prudential Securities Incorporated

Tom Dorsey, the premier market watcher and master technician, gives a well thought out plan and elaborate back up support net for those brokers who want to continue their profession into the next millennium. With ferocious competition from brokers, both online and otherwise, as well as mutual funds and other financial entities, reading Dorsey's recipe for success is a must. Here is a guy I read everyday via the fax - second only to The Wall Street Journal - and his advice is worth considering -- Frank Cappiello, Portfolio manager & Panelist, Wall Street Week with Louis Rukeyser

4.0 out of 5 stars Helps brokers become successful and investors make money, September 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Thriving as a Broker in the 21st Century (Hardcover)
The book consists of interviews with some of America's best-know brokers. They go far in revealing incidents and secrets they acquired during their long experience. Tom Dorsey, himself no lesser expert, interviews them in a clever way. He compliments what they are saying and prompts them with cues that sometimes trigger more details than they may have wanted to give.

Written for the broker the book is highly accessible to the average investor. The many real-life examples and useful practical advice will help new brokers succeed and investors make money. The issues range from the appropriate emotional disposition "the key to success for any broker is confidence" to the utility of technical analysis "the beauty of the Point and Figure method is there is no room for subjectivity."

Dorsey's insights extend into the 21st century. He has a clear vision of what the new century (technology and the Internet) has in store for brokers and investors.

Not to be overlooked are the book's two Appendices. The first one gives summary information on 350 web sites for brokers. The second presents the basics of the Point & Figure Charting technique, something that no ones is to better suited to speak about than Dorsey himself.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Book re-opened my mind as to how great this business is., September 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Thriving as a Broker in the 21st Century (Hardcover)
All of the many people interviewed in the book do things a little differently, while all are successful. The book reminded me that you can not be all things to all people. Decide how you want to run your business, have fun and do it. Find clients who meet your parameters. While I am new to the point and figure method and the DW system, I realize now that, if I had used it, I could have prevented some disasters and saved some clients from the fundamental world. Using both technical and fundamental analyses together will benefit both you and your clients. Anyone serious about their career as a "stock broker" should read the book and learn a little something about technical analysis. Great book Tom thanks!!!!!!!
