Thrombosis & Bleeding, An Era of Discovery,
This review is from: Thrombosis & Bleeding: An Era of Discovery (Paperback)
Dr. Hougie's new book is a real gem. Only someone with personal involvement in the field, over a long time, as well as a talent for writing, as Dr. Hougie has, could have condensed so much information, and so clearly, in only 184 pages. I read the book from cover to cover, and found delight in each page. Most books of Thrombosis and Bleeding are enormous, dry, and written for the expert. This book is a wonderful exception. I recommend it very highly to all health professionals longing to understand the difficult field of Hemostasis, from its historical beginnings, to the most recent concepts. In fact the book should have had an additional subtitle: "Coagulation Made Easy AND Pleasant". Liberto Pechet, MD. FACP

Cecil Hougie (1922-2010) has created a great read. Using history as a background, he fleshes out the clotting cascade. As a physician, I previously found this subject somewhat tedious. As a result of reading this work, I no longer have to run back to the textbooks or internet to refresh my memory. This book is a great medical education tool.In terms of a balanced review, there are some very minor points that I think should be addressed. Dr Hougie's writing style is at times a bit awkward. I encourage the reader to push on. It's well worth it. Additionally, at times one is left with only part of the story being told. To fill in one of the voids, Dr Judith Pool (1919-1975) died from a brain tumor. [...] Finally, I found it curious that a reference to the death of John Hageman was not included. Here it is: Oscar D. Ratnoff, M.D., Robert J. Busse, Jr., M.D., and Robert P. Sheon, M.D. N Engl J Med 1968; 279:760-761 Students may find mnemonic devices such as TENET (12,11,9,8,10) helpful. I am giving this book a perfect score and placing on my "required reading list for medical students".
