Book Description

September 1, 2008
What do you think of those Russian brides? What do they think of YOU?
The American dream has been part of world mythology for generations. As the land of opportunity, America still entices people from around the world. Marrying an American has been one of the most popular means since single Irishmen or Italians looked for brides from the old country in the nineteenth century. Since the end of the Cold War, East Europeans are one of the latest waves to give it a try.
Some come here, marry, and live happily ever after. Some discover the country (or the man of their dreams) is different from what they were expecting and find the cultural leap a bit too much. Given the contrasts, contradictions, eccentricities and peculiarities (add to that the pain of leaving one's homeland, difficulties with a new language, etc.), many relationships stumble.
One question stands out to a newcomer: Why are so many Americans stressed out and so unhappy despite their signature smiles? We knew that everything the communists told us about communism was a lie, the Russians say, but we didn't realize that what they told us about capitalism was true. How much difference is there between Soviet propaganda and American spin ?
A Russian-born journalist, Ms. Popova shines a blinding light on some of the amusing and amazing oddities that are revealed when an outsider takes a blunt look at how we live. With the eye of a keen observer, the author humorously highlights inconsistencies and ambiguities in our culture. The America that foreign wives experience is a land that the natives have not seen for themselves.
The author crisscrosses the country from deep in the heart of Dixie, where even food is a matter of right or wrong, to the environmentally conscious Northwest where one might drive to the recycling center in a military-style SUV just to drop off last year s electronic gadget.
Adaptation to the new life demands moral courage and profound compromises. One cannot avoid the melting pot; it will choose for her or him what will be retained and what will be lost. The dream of America does not always have a storybook ending.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Russian-born Popova is an independent journalist who writes for Russian and European media and directs documentaries on ecology, science, and culture. Having married an American, she has lived in the Deep South and the Pacific Northwest in the past ten-plus years during which time she has made many discoveries about how Americans live. She presents a collection of humorous essays, based on travels around the country, which describe the inconsistencies and ambiguities she has found in the culture of the U.S. Accessible to the general reader, the text will have particular appeal to those in intercultural organizations and professions, students, travelers, and educators specializing in cultural differences in expectations, communication styles, religion, and gender roles. --BOOK NEWS, Inc.: SciTech Book News

More About the Author

Russian-born Elena Popova says that she became an author so she could try a writer's block. That luxury she could never afford directing documentaries and working as a staff writer and TV personality for Russian and European media. You can visit her webpage www.elenapopovabooks.com

Ms. Popova holds a master's degree in journalism/environmental science. In her book "Through Alien Eyes: a View of America and Intercultural Marriages" she "humorously highlights inconsistencies and ambiguities in our culture with the eye of a modern Tocqueville."

5.0 out of 5 stars An Unique Look at the U.S. from a Foreign-Born Journalist and World Traveller, March 15, 2009
This review is from: Through Alien Eyes: A View of America and Intercultural Marriages (Perfect Paperback)
Due to unique economical, geographical, political, and religious reasons, Americans pay very little attention to how the rest of the world views us. Since we are the only superpower in so many dimensions, we can afford such inattention. However, the world order is changing, and the ground is shifting under our feet. We might want to think twice before labeling ourselves as "Liberators," "Saviors," "Soldiers of God," and "Police of the world." This book covers many aspects of American life - from food to sex, prejudice, misconceptions, education, politics, and so on, providing a unique, interesting, and hilarious starting point for people who are willing to take a second look at themselves, a look Through Alien Eyes, literally.

Merely stepping out the airplane, an immigrant plunges into a struggle for a foothold in this alien county. For one particular group of immigrants - foreign brides - the stakes are unusually high in this battle. They have to deal with stereotypes, misunderstanding, hostility, and cultural differences. They take a gamble on their career, friends, and family for a mere opportunity to find true love and prosperity in the land of their dreams. Some have succeeded while many have not. A few even paid the ultimate price with their lives. Regardless of our attitude toward immigrants, we can all learn something from sweat, tears, and blood they shed in searching for a better life.

From her unique perspective - even if not one of a mail-order bride - the author looks at American life through the prism of a cross-cultural marriage. While every marriage has issues, cultural differences can magnify these issues to a much greater proportion when even a simple task of chopping vegetables can become a flashing point.

Of course, the book couldn't avoid such topic as sex. From the popularity of Viagra we know that the insurmountable American sex drive is way overrated. A reader will find the foreign-born female author's take on this issue most intriguing...

Rarely has an author so eloquently beaten the self righteous American psyche with it's own stick of ignorance as gracefully and colorfully as Ms. Popova.
