Saves the Day is by far the best band I have heard in a long time. I agree with most reviews - it is heartfelt and poetic. One person mentioned it not being catchy or meoldic. I couldn't disagree more. Through Being Cool is both a catchy and melodic album, totally heartfelt and poetic. Amazing lyrics and exceptional vocals are driven by extremely talented musicians who...

3.0 out of 5 stars I dunno...
I have mixed feelings about this album. I've listened to it about four times, and I honestly don't know what I think of it. The first time I didn't like it, the second time I did, the third time I really liked it, and the fourth time it just annoyed me. I think it's the singers voice that gets on my nerves: it sounds thin somehow, not strong. What some people call...

5.0 out of 5 stars INSPIRING, April 11, 2000
This review is from: Through Being Cool (Audio CD)
Saves the Day is by far the best band I have heard in a long time. I agree with most reviews - it is heartfelt and poetic. One person mentioned it not being catchy or meoldic. I couldn't disagree more. Through Being Cool is both a catchy and melodic album, totally heartfelt and poetic. Amazing lyrics and exceptional vocals are driven by extremely talented musicians who really KNOW their instruments. Chris Conley displays knowledge beyond his years. His lyrics have both made me laugh and choked me up. Over the last five months, the CD has rarely left my stereo, and even then, only for roadtrips.

If you like the Get Up Kids, face to face, with a little Down By Law, you will LOVE Saves the Day. This album is FANTASTIC. I recommend it without reservation.

5.0 out of 5 stars saves the day rocks, May 28, 2001

i had heard 1 saves the day song before i bought this cd, "holly hox, forget me nots" off a vagrant sampler and wasn't impressed. but i was looking for a new cd and when i came across this one w/ the guys on the cover i thought i'd give it a shot. BEST thing i've ever done for myself musically. the first thing i thought was that chris sounded a little like Jordan from NFG but after a few listens he evolved into his own person. he just has the most awesome emo voice. and his lyrics aren't dumb, you can actually listen to them and think, wow, that really is beautiful, and they actually have meaning. so if you are looking for something original or just want something new DO pick up this cd, you will NOT regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Roots of carbon copys, July 28, 2004
This review is from: Through Being Cool (Audio CD)
This album is a true representation of what the word "emo" and "punk" should mean. Those words are consistently thrown around to any band whose singer/songwriter has been dumped once or twice by his girlfriend. To me pissing and moaning doesn't exactly turn into melodic gold. In a genre filled with a new band each week sounding like the band you just heard last week these guys and a few others make it worth listening to. I bought this album a few years ago after buying "Stay What You Are". I couldn't imagine a better album, but I was treated to a fury of 35 minutes of some of the best music I had ever listened to. The riffs aren't wholly original but work just the same. The lyrics and the way Chris sings them are what makes this album a treat. Lyrics such as "Let me take this awkward saw/ run it against your thighs/ cut some flesh away, I'll carry this piece of you with me" had me floored. For anyone who likes the emo genre and wants to hear a band that doesn't sound like all the rest, mostly because most try to sound like them. Give this album a try and stop wasting your time on bands that don't put the effort in you deserve.

4.0 out of 5 stars Probaly their best, October 15, 2001
This review is from: Through Being Cool (Audio CD)
This is Saves the Day's most popular cd, and for good reason, It's probaly their best one. It's slower, cleaner, and more enjoyable then their previous cd, "Can't Slow Down". The main change is the formation. The band now has 3 different people carrying it. The changes are the 2 guitar players and the bass player, all were not on CSD. This is for the better though, as the band's overall sound is much improved.

While it does have it's small problems, it's still worth a purchase, especially for punk-emo fans. Still, this might be a little too light for even NFG fans. This is a good cd though. Chris's voice is filled with emotion, much better and cleaner than on CSD.

The standouts here are "You Vandal", "Shoulder to the Wheel" and "Rocks Tonic Juice Magic", this is Saves the Day at their best. Chris's voice is excellent on these songs, not to mention the excellent drum work.

However, the main problem with TBC is still the problem that hampered CSD. The uneven gutaring and basslines. Sure, it's overall much cleaner than on CSD, but still, the majority of the songs don't have a steady rythum to them. The thing that keeps it together is the drum work. Still, it sounds a lot better than it did on CSD.

So, I do recomend this cd to most fans of emo-punk. It's sure going to please them. Still, this might be a little to soft for fans of most of the pop punk out now. It's not a real problem though, If you like what you hear, go ahead and buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars More well crafted than it seems, August 9, 2005
This review is from: Through Being Cool (Audio CD)
My experience with the cd is actually the exact opposite of the guy whose review is below mine. I got the CD senior year of high school, and now I am a senior in college. When I first got the CD, I liked a lot of songs on it, and didn't like some. I thought it was an ok album, but nothing amazing. 4 years later, I now think it is one of the most well crafted albums I've ever heard. The thing is, you have to listen to the whole thing striaght through without interruption in order to understand why. Every song fills an exact purpose and makes the songs around it sound better. There are some songs that are great on their own, my personal favorites being You Vandal, The Last Lie I Ever Told, and Banned From The Back Porch, but they sound even better in the context of everything else. A lot of these songs I would never listen to on their own because, without their context, they aren't that good of songs. Altogether, however, every song sounds perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite band of all time..., May 5, 2004

Ok, you can declare that this album is great. But seriously if you go intensely into it (the music, lyrics, meaning, metaphor, expressions, emotions) you'll realize just how more than great this CD is. I know theres like 100 reviews on here but I had to add my input. Saves the Day is like this secret band that I hold onto as my own... ya know. I feel like its my great secret. But saves the day should get out there and make themselves known to other unfortunate people who have never heard of them. Anyway... This was the first saves the day CD I ever bought and the first time I heard them. This whole CD...every song every line of every lyric, I LOVE. I've had it for years and I listen to it almost everyday, even right now. It NEVER gets old. His voice is wonderful and one of the best voices of emo/punk/pop out there, one of the greatest. Listening to it makes me feel so many emotions and when you listen to Saves the Day your own emotions get caught into their songs and when you play them back... you'll feel them all over again. It's my drug. This album is most definantly one to go out and buy with your own money. As the albums go on...Stay What You Are and In Reverie, they mature so much and their lyrics become so much more emotional and complicated and expressive... their wonderful. Although Through Being Cool is the one I mostly listen to... I love every single one of their works because you can just pop them in and get so many emotions flooding into you. You'll never skip a song on this album. His voice and lyrics give you such feelings and imagery. You can interperet his songs in whatever way it makes you feel. Chris and his band are so intensely good at what they do.
You'll loBe it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Um, wow, November 21, 2002
This review is from: Through Being Cool (Audio CD)
I'm older than your average emo fan; meaning I'm not in the 12-17 age range. I'm a twenty-something who appreciates music, regardless of what label you slap on it. And this is excellent music.

I work in retail. Therefore I work with a bunch of high-school kids. So one day about four years ago, I was talking with one of the kids about music, and she recommended this CD. I don't know why, but I went out and bought it without hearing a note of it. And I was most definitely not disappointed.

I love the sound of this style of music. It's got the charging guitar parts of the punk and metal I grew up on, but it's got excellent melody and brilliant lyrics. Okay, the brilliant lyrics can really only be attributed to Saves the Day. I've gotten to know and like a couple of other emo bands, but Saves the Day remains the only one that impresses me lyrically.

Chris Conley, who I guess was no older than 19 or 20 when this album came out, is amazing. I really dig that voice and, I cannot stress this enough, HIS LYRICS ARE BRILLIANT. I mean, this kid is a poet. No other word expresses it.

My favorite song from the get-go was and remains "Shoulder to the Wheel." I also really dig "All-Star Me," "Holly Hox Forget Me Nots," "My Sweet Fracture," and "Banned From the Back Porch." I could just go on and on, but I'll spare you. Suffice to say that I now own all of Saves the Day's albums and this one remains my favorite. This band is going to be around for a very long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just about perfect, January 26, 2005
By
This review is from: Through Being Cool (Audio CD)
This album was introduced to me when I was a freshman in high school. In the subsequent years, I've listened to this album and consistently realize how amazing it is. It is the perfect album for someone who still has a little bit of high-school teen angst in him. I know even at 19 I still do, and I think everyone else does, even those much older than me. As far as pop-punk records, this ranks up there with Green Day's "Dookie." The music is high-energy and catchy as hell, the lyrics are well written, and, while they are of the stereotypical emo "boy pines for girl" material, they are so well written that it doesn't matter. After all, write about what you know, right? A lot of the lyrics are dark and sometimes depressing, but Chris's vocals still manage to be catchy as hell. Anyway, this is still one of my favorite albums, and should be inspiring to anyone who loves melodic punk rock with an emotional edge. Jersey's finest got it right with this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Life; In Song, March 31, 2004

how often is it that you find a cd with lyrics that describe everything you're feeling? come on now- this is really a diamond in the rough kind of deal.

1. All-star me; not my favorite but a good start of song- fast and an attenttion grabber

2. You Vandal; my favorite song of all time....well at least of the decade ( can anyone really compete with 80's music?) love the lyircs " my ribs have parted ways. they said we're not going to protect this heart you have". doesn't get much better...::sigh::

3.Shoulder to the Wheel: Very sing-along-able....awesomely catchy chorus- shout out to queen in there...

4. rocks tonic juice magic: another classic- the whole spooning out eyes and sawing of thighs part can seem kind of odd....but really- tell me you've never given thought to sawing someones leg of? you know you have.....

5. holly hox, forget me nots: very good love song....for when there's no one to love anymore....

6. third engine: makes you wish some guy was that devoted to you.....::wistful sigh::

7.My sweet fracture: very good bass line that'll stick with you....once again stellar lyrics....and love the pause before the chorus...

8. the vast spoils of america: love the beginning....very good song to jump on your bed to- gets you moving....

9. the last lie i told: this is a sad one...oh man do i feel bad for this guy....just wanna hug him....or give him so ice cream and a box of tissues.....love the whole song....

10. do you know what i love the most?: not my favorite song....but still another good one ( the whole cd's awesome)...

11. through being cool: title song- every kids goes through the whole 'try to be cool and popular thing' and this is exactly what they think when they become cool....i adore the bluntly honest songs.....

12.Banned from the back porch: end a good cd with a good song....they save the best ( at least one of them) for last.....

so overall...i would defintly say it's worth it....just buy it- it'll make you feel a lot better....

5.0 out of 5 stars One to remember, October 14, 2003
This review is from: Through Being Cool (Audio CD)
For saves the day's sophomore album, I was quite proud. A very good follow up their debut album Can't slow down. Lead singer Chris Conley once again puts on an A+ show with his very emotional heart-felt lyrics. With anthem oriented songs like Rocks Tonic Juice Magic, Shoulder to the wheel, and Through being cool is hard not to find yourself tapping your foot or singing along with these guys. I just recently picked up their latest album in Reverie, and i admit it does sound quite a bit different from their previous albums but just listen to it, and u will recognize them. I think Through being cool is a good leadway to my personal favorite record, Stay what you are. Anyway STD comes back with a good Emo/pop punk record that you should definitely check out. I just saw them live with Taking Back Sunday, and they fit perfectly. Their lyrics are very similar in being very emotional, they just present them in different ways. Taking Back Sunday just blew my mind, but STD rounded out the show with an amazing performance.

(For you doubters who dont like IN REVERIE that much, just keep listening, it will grow on you, if that doesnt work, go go go see them live, when they mix in their old tunes with some tracks off the new record, you will soon like it. It gives you a much older STD sound when they do it live) -ROCK ON
