A Great Literary History Resource,
By kayinpa (Pennsylvania) - See all my reviews
This review is from: All Through the Ages (Paperback)
This book by Christine Miller is an excellent resource for history either as a main source or supplement. Mrs. Miller has done revised works of H. A. Guerber, this however is not one of them. "All Through the Ages" lists by chronological order and suggested reading age books about or that take place in just about every period of history. It is not inexhaustable but recommends some of the best books. I highly recommend this book for both homeschoolers, private schoolers and public schoolers!

As an eclectic homeschooling mom of 3 (11, 8, 6), I can't tell you how many hours I spent researching historical books that are accurate, engaging, and age-appropriate. No more! All Through the Ages has rendered all that work unnecessary. They have created a comprehensive list from some of the best resources, including Books Children Love, Honey for a Child's Heart, Greenleaf Press, Newbery Award books, and Great Books of Western Civilization, among others.
The lists are broken down into chronological history, geographical history, history of science and mathematics, history of the visual arts and music, and great books of Western civilization and the Christian tradition. Within each section, the lists are further broken down into resources for all ages, resources for 1-3 grade, 4-6 grade, etc. Each grade level then has categories for specific events, biographies, historical fiction, and literature. Each book is followed by a few words' description, and a notation indicating from which book list or publisher it was sourced. I love, love, love this book. I would part with 2/3 of my home library before I would give this one up. Maybe not even then. I only got this book a few weeks ago, and it's already saved me hours of research. Add a math program, and you've got your entire K-12 core curriculum. I highly recommend this book as the primary resource for any eclectic homeschooler pursuing a liberal arts education, and an excellent secondary resource for any other homeschooler, or really any parent, looking to supplement their child's education with some engaging, high-quality books.

This is a great resource for homeschoolers, who want to teach history by having their children read real books. If you are a classical (trivium) homeschooler, this book will help you tremendously with finding historical books for every age group. It's written from a Christian perspective. The book gives lists and lists of great books. You can pick and choose. It also gives pretty detailed dates and events list for every time period. I am so glad that I came across this book. Thanks to the author for taking her time to compile such a great resource!
