Amazing Album, August 12, 2009
This review is from: Through Darkness (Audio CD)
This is probably my second favorite Christian metal band at this point, second only to Extol. Renascent is a melodic death metal band. They sound kind of like a mix of Dimmu Borgir and Crimson Moonlight. Note based on their lyrics and sound they are not at all Black (unBlack), they are death metal, a common misconception about this band (like people thinking Children of Bodom is black metal, nope sorry). They have some amazing riffs and break downs, extremely high tempo drumming, supportive piano and symphonic elements, and in-your-face Christian lyrics. There really isn't a bad song on the entire CD, I like every song on the CD, especially Scenes of a Tragedy, Through Darkness, LST Journey, Wisdom Calls, Warriors of the Morning, Exodus, and Majestic are all favorites from the CD. Scenes of a Tragedy just has an amazing chorus and build up that leads to it. Through Darkness has an epic piano intro that will give you goosebumps every time, and the rest of the crunchy guitar riffs throughout the song will have you wanting more. LST Journey reminds me of Amon Amarth towards the beginning, and then leads to a catchy chorus and breakdown that will get stuck in your head all day, I've never heard anything like the riff that leads to the breakdown (3:20) either. Wisdom Calls is the same way, as is Warriors of the Morning, the chorus is awesome, and it has a sweet solo after the breakdown, Exodus and Majestic are also very good songs. I recommend this CD to any black/death metal fan out there, Christian or not, you'll LOVE this band.

Born Again, October 28, 2008
This review is from: Through Darkness (Audio CD)
I got this album purely on spec, based on Amazon's related interest feature and on the strength of the reviews I saw. As such, I must say that this isn't quite the genre of metal I normally seek out: I'm more of a power and/or melodic and/or folk listener at heart. Strictly in terms of black metal "sound" (this being an Unblack band, after all) I find little to fault this group for. Message-wise, it's no surprise that metal, especially the heavier stuff, is better suited to delivering so-called Jeremiads (especially the sinners burning in hell part) than espousing the positive aspects of Christianity. To be perfectly honest, this is not an album I intend to keep, but I do believe it will make a fine addition to the library of a friend who's much more into the blackened side of the spectrum. Right music, wrong listener (me).
