Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This is a better than average fantasy begun by Kornwise, then completed by Anthony ( Xanth ) after Kornwise's death. In spite of the enforced one-sidedness of the collaboration, the writing is skillful and seamless; in large part because Anthony was Kornwise's favorite author, whose style he emulated in his first novel. Seth Warner, Rame, Tirsa and Vidav are the Chosen, predicted by prophecy to be the decisive factor in a conflict between a putatively evil sorcerer (named Nefarious) and a greedy and bigoted Empire. Furthermore, the outcome on this plane of Earth affects similar moral conflicts on the other planes of Earth, from which each of the Chosen came when called by the Empire's magic. Sent by the Empire to destroy Nefarious, they wonder if they are a suicide decoy to hide the Empire's real attack. Betrayals and the plights of non-humans under the Empire add to their confusion. Their confrontation with Nefarious reveals final truths in a surprising yet logical plot twist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! in all meanings of the word!, July 10, 2000
By

This review is from: Through the Ice (Library Binding)
It's a good book to begin with. It has an original storyline and an ending with a statement on morals that I personally believe or at least, would like to believe. Before I read Through the Ice I had read many other Peirs Anthony novels but was hesitant to read a collaboration. When I read it I was pleasantly suprised at the freshness of the writing. I'm dying to reveal the other reason why I liked this book, but I feel it would ruin it for others. Suffice to say I think that what Anthony did in writing this book is one of the nicest and most touching things I've ever known anyone to do. A good story in itself. After I read this book I felt better about people and life in general. Not saying it's a masterpiece or anything but it's quite good and I can't think of anything really wrong with it which is all I ask of any book. Five stars is my score and I'm sticking to it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Through The Ice, May 10, 2004
By

This review is from: Through the Ice (Hardcover)
I originaly started reading this book to waste time visting a close friend who worked at a library, i picked it because it wasn't too long for the time i would have visiting her, and it was co-written by Peirs Anthony an author who came with high regards from my family. In my first day of reading it i got through about the first 4 chapters, i then decided to check the book out so i could finish it. When i got the time at home to read more of the book it seemed as though i was reading a totaly different book as Seth an ordinary teenager was transported to a mystical land after a fight with some street punks in the are he lived in. To say this transition was a bad thing would be far from the truth the book only got better as more of this world was revealed and more of it's mesages made clear. As i got deeper into the story i began to notice trends in some of the events and morals portrayed by the two authors. By the end of the book, and Seth's actions near the end i became almost certain my hunch was right. This book seemed to me to be the epitome of a modern day satire as the fantasy world seth is transported to shows mimiced problems from our own society. This only made me enjoy the book more, never before had i encountered a satire in a fantasy book, it was very enjoyable and i would recomened it to anyone who is interested in fantasy. Hope you Enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars loved it, June 9, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Through the Ice (Library Binding)
I loved this book. I have read it at least a dozen times, and I never get sick of it. The cold, hard logic used by seth towards the end is amazing, leaving you to reread the last pages over and over again.
