5.0 out of 5 stars You'll be reading this long after your hysterectomy.
I wish I had this book before my hysterectomy...it would have helped me to understand what to expect. "Through the Land of Hyster: The Hyster Sisters Guide" is loaded with information from women who speak from experience. Kathy's Princess Stories are wonderfully entertaining and at the same time show how important it is to ease back into your normal routine...

3.0 out of 5 stars A little too cute
There is good information in this book, but I found it wearisome wading through all the saccarin fairy tale stuff. Women who have had hysterectomies are referred to as 'punctured princesses,' and answers to basic questions often take the form of cute-sie fairy tales. I just found it all a little much to wade through, and not at all funny.

"Through the Land of Hyster: The Hyster Sisters Guide" is loaded with information from women who speak from experience. Kathy's Princess Stories are wonderfully entertaining and at the same time show how important it is to ease back into your normal routine after surgery. Questions about hormone therapy? You'll find information on hormones too! This book is for PreOp, PostOp or for anyone who has had a hysterectomy and should be packed into your suitcase for some interesting reading in the hospital. Even now, two years after my surgery, I still enjoy reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Informative, June 8, 2001

I ordered this book prior to my surgery. It made me laugh and helped calm some very real fears. It gives some helpful hints on early recovery, and what to bring to the hospital. I ended up giving one copy to my doctor and another copy to the hospital. The book is set up in a fairy tale like setting, but addresses real issues that face some women before and after this major surgery!

Kathy Kelley's book, "Through the Land of Hyster: The Hyster Sisters Guide" is a MUST! Any woman who is going to be having a hysterectomy should make sure to read this prior to her surgery date. The book is full of all kinds of helpful points from what to take with you to the hospital to your recovery time at home. There is wonderful information on the subject of hormone replacement and the "how to's" of easing back into your normal daily routine. This book is quick reading, full of wisdom, and lots of fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Hysterectomy Book, February 6, 2002

This review is from: Through the Land of Hyster: The Hyster Sisters Guide (Paperback)
This is the best book that I read on hysterectomy before having my surgery. It is written in easy to understand language, for women by women. The stories are humorous and informative, and the suggestions given by the sisters are very useful. I have referred back to the book numerous times since my surgery.

When told I needed a hysterectomy I was scared and very nervous. Kathy's book kept me from going crazy. The information and personal stories helped me to know what to expect and what was normal. It gave me great insight on what was all happening at the time that I was full of fears and questions. I will always recommend this book to any woman facing an upcoming hysterectomy or have just had the surgery. This is a definite MUST BUY!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Inside Information, October 29, 2005

I found this book filled with information that I've not found anywhere else. Its format is a mix of reproduced emails, question and answers by a variety of people addressing the same question, and short pieces on a great many topics.

The book is short, easy to read, and very light, although it does touch on heavy subjects, such as hormones gone awry after surgery and what to do about it. It also talks about things that always happen but no one ever seems to address in books or even in conversation. For example, one woman mentions that she smelled an odd scent coming from her body after surgery and wondered if anyone else had experienced this. Several people responded with a resounding "yes!" A few had been ignored by hosital staff and doctors, but a couple others had been told it was from the anasthesia administered at surgery. Tbe book explains these little oddities and can put one's mind at ease.

Small topics like these are addressed throughout the book and give a clear picture of what to expect. One topic I found particularly helpful was the focus on the swelling stomach, aka "swelly belly." I've read little about this topic in other books, but apparently it's quite a problem for the women after surgery. Many good ideas and tips to help with "swelly belly" are offered. The whole book is like this, and I find it is worth every penny I spent on this short little book.

I gave it four stars because like another reviewer, I found some of the writing silly. Although it was jammed full of excellent information, the delivery at times felt, well, a bit too sappy, even for me, a person who appreicates humor. I know a lot of people like it, and I, too, like the idea of going to the Castle and calling one's self a "punctured princess." However, some of it just went a bit too far. I believe it's important to be able to laugh and to create an image of being a princess, so when we're being wheeled down the hall on a gurney into the operating room, it will give us courage, so I liked the lightheartedness, but at times it made me squirm reading it. Still, worth every penny even if I had to wade quickly through a few passages.

I still recommend the book highly for information that you won't find anywhere else...[...]!

4.0 out of 5 stars Information and sisterly emotional support., January 8, 2005

This book seems to be addressed to one's inner child, and was comforting when surgery was approaching and I was feeling nervous. When I first started researching hysterectomy surgery and alternative treatments, I wanted straight-forward facts and statistics. At that time, this book did not appeal to me. Later, as surgery approached, reading this book was like getting a gentle hug. This should not be the only book you read when deciding on a hysterectomy, and when choosing what method of hysterectomy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little book., October 30, 2004
This review is from: Through the Land of Hyster: The Hyster Sisters Guide (Paperback)
My sister gave me this book when she found out I would be having a hysterectomy. I found most of the books written about hysterectomy are too technical. Through the Land of Hyster is written in language that is easy to understand, and includes information from women who have actually had a hysterectomy.

The Bedtime Stories are cute, but they are also very informative. Each story has a message, whether it be about hormones, insomnia mood swings, etc.

If you're looking for a medical book, this isn't for you. But if you want answers to questions about your the surgery, your recovery, or hormone therapy from women who have actually been there, done that, then this is the book for you.

I plan on buying a book for my doctor's office. I'm sure his other patients will enjoy reading it.

This was a great resource book for me prior to surgery and after surgery. I refer back to it on a weekly basis as I'm recovering. It's for women written by women and the insight is very helpful. I would definitely suggest this book to anyone considering a hysterectomy as it gives helpful hints regarding what to expect prior to and after surgery. It's easy to understand too!
