From Library Journal
Jarring in their intensity and their realistic portrayal of lower-middle-class German society, these three plays by iconoclastic contemporary German writer Kroetz contain characters bound by circumstance and always on the verge of violence. Born in 1946 in Munich, Kroetz did not follow a traditional German career path. After flunking out of vocational school, he worked as an actor, laborer, and writer. Now he has added media celebrity, television star, and director to his growing list of accomplishments. Mensch Meier, the third play offered here, premiered in 1978 and is already a classic. This collection, one of the first publications in a new series of translations of world drama, is the only English-language edition of Kroetz's plays. It is given a solid translation and introduction by Downey. An important addition to libraries collecting world drama and contemporary German literature.
