Book Description

9 and up4 and up
`I should see the garden far better,' said Alice to herself, `if I could get to the top of that hill: and here's a path that leads straight to it--at least, no, it doesn't do that--' (after going a few yards along the path, and turning several sharp corners), `but I suppose it will at last. But how curiously it twists! It's more like a corkscrew than a path! Well, THIS turn goes to the hill, I suppose--no, it doesn't!

3.0 out of 5 stars Soso, December 4, 2008
This review is from: Through The Looking Glass (Paperback)
Though this book is not much better than Alice's Adventures, the chess motif and theme does make the book much more interesting. With the bossy, dominant Red Queen and the quiet, kind, messy white queen, the book is a study in contrasts.

The interweaving of the Nursery Rhyme Characters and the frequent fish poetry references does provide more continuity and a sense of sequential events than Alice's first adventure. I also appreciated the linking of the cat at the beginning and end of the story.

It does still feel like Carroll did way too many opium pipes in his time.

(First written as Journal Reading Notes in 1999.)

1.0 out of 5 stars Reading with Tequila, March 21, 2010
This review is from: Through The Looking Glass (Paperback)
I very much disliked Through the Looking Glass. It was trippy in a way that would be better suited for someone high on drugs: pure gibberish masquerading as whimsical storytelling.

Every other chapter was the same. Meet a pair of characters, then watch them fight. Mix in some random poetry and songs. Add to that some round-about dialogue and logic that will make the reader dizzy. Viola, a classic.

It was easy to follow, but hard to understand or relate to. I knew what was going on but I couldn't grasp why, or even how. I believe that this story would probably be better experienced through a visual means, a movie to television special. I only finished it because it was 100 pages. Had it been longer, I wouldn't have given up without a second thought.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book, January 10, 2009
I loved reading this book on my Kindle. It didn't have many pictures in it but it was a great book. I loved the poems of the Jaberwockies. If you loved Through The Looking Glass, you should see a movie called The Last Mimsy. It has a part about the girl Alice that the books were based on and on this book too.

Spoiler: I loved that she has two kittens and didn't know about going to Wonderland. My favorite characters were the White King and the White Queen.
