As a former service puppy raiser, the book provides wonderful insight into the lessons learned about people and life while raising one of these special puppies. The story conveyed in the book provides meaningful inspiration to everyone, not just puppy raisers. The illustrations bring the story to life. Highly recommended!!

Watching her black lab puppy Otis grow up, the author learns a lot more about surviving life as a human -- how to appreciate each day as a special gift, to give love unconditionally, to forgive without thinking twice, and to appreciate the simple things. The lessons Otis can teach all of us are very thought-provoking. And the illustrations in this book are magical, capturing with exact precision the moods, facial expressions, body language, and trouble that puppies, particularly black lab retriever puppies, often get into. A very uplifting book for dog-lovers, and just ordinary humans, too. Highly recommended!

This is a wonderful book! I read it frequently -- whenever I want to remember what is REALLY important. Of course, my face is wet with tears by the time I'm done, but they are tears of gratitude. Read this book when you need to remind yourself that what matters in life is not fame or fortune, but love. Once again, animals show us how it is done.

I love this book!!! It is not only an inspiration for puppy raisers, but also a look at life in general. Everyone should read it. I am a puppy raiser in FL and raised a puppy who looks just like Otis - what a bonus for me.

Why is this book out of print? It is so magnificent!!!...

It will pertain to people of all ages. I have purchased the book for all of our grandchildren as a gift they will be able to carry with them through life. I have also given it as a gift to friends who are having various personal problems as a reminder that life is not always easy. The content contains lessons learned by a guide dog puppy in his first year of life. What is amazing is that all of these lessons apply to all of us. A must read.

Moving story about a puppy in training to be a guide dog. Wonderfully moving text and absolutely beautiful pictures. As a puppy raiser for Guiding Eyes for the Blind, I truly appreciate the beauty and accuracy of this story which follows a puppy from the arrival at the puppy raiser's home until graduation as a working part of a guide dog team. A true classic that is appropriate for all ages, this book tells lovingly about the joys, laughter, love and pain of raising a puppy that will some day give another the gift of independence and mobility.

Simple, but a great message. You can feel the pain of giving up something you have come to love, yet feel the pride in what you have given for someone else. Great book.

This book with touch the heart of just about anyone who loves dogs....but as a former guide dog puppy raiser it brought tears to my eyes. While raising "Gordie" our guide dog puppy, not a single day went by that I didn't feel blessed to be learning some of lifes most precious lessons from him. This book is beautifully illustrated and will be enjoyed dog owners of all ages.

This is my absolute favorite book. It is a lesson in life for everyone. I have probably given this book to about 10 people for gifts. Do yourself a big favor and buy this book. You will not be sorry.
