Book Description

The explosive sequel to the Amazon.com Bestseller, Alice in Deadland.

More than two years have passed since Alice followed a Biter with bunny ears down a hole, triggering events that forever changed her life and that of everyone in the Deadland. The Red Guards have been fought to a standstill; Alice has restored some measure of peace between humans and Biters; and under Alice, humans have laid the foundations of the first large, organized community since The Rising- a city called Wonderland.

That peace is shattered in a series of vicious Biter attacks and Alice finds herself shunned by the very people she helped liberate. Now she must re-enter the Deadland to unravel this new conspiracy that threatens Wonderland. Doing so will mean coming face to face with her most deadly adversary ever- the Red Queen..

Editorial Reviews

Review

Read all the books in the Alice in Deadland series:
- Alice in Deadland
- Through The Killing Glass (Alice in Deadland Book II)
- Off With Their Heads (The Prequel to Alice in Deadland)
- Hunting the Snark: An Alice in Deadland Adventure

Praise for Alice in Deadland:

"ALICE IN DEADLAND is a fast paced, creative zombie tale." - Reads A Lot Book Reviews

"Alice in Deadland may be a 'zombie-like' story, but it is a metaphorical tale of how we tend to demonize that which we do not understand. It is obvious that there are socio-economic and geopolitical undercurrents in the story line and shadows of colonialism, post-colonialism, jingoism, and intolerance. If you can read between the lines and see the deeper meaning to the story, Alice in Deadland is a wonderfully entertaining ebook." - eNovel Reviews

"Words to live by: Eat all your vegetables. Exercise like a fiend. Sleep a solid seven to eight hours a day. Never, ever read Alice in Deadland before you sleep. Ever. Because if you do make the mistake of idly perusing the first page, you're going to want to finish the last and that, ladies and gentlemen, is a foul surprise to learn on a work day. An unusual blend of the zombie mythos, conspiracy theories and Lewis Caroll, Alice in Deadland is self-proclaimed 'cubicle worker by day, author by night' Mainak Dhar's most recent offering and one of the best reinterpretations of the childhood fable yet." - Kindlefu.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Mainak Dhar has remade the zombie genre! March 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I first came across -- and read -- "Alice in Deadland" sometime between Christmas of 2011 and New Year's of 2012. It was one of those must-read-in-one-sitting books and I did read it in one sitting. Yet its narrative energy wasn't its only virtue: it was the most original zombie tale I'd ever seen. It made Stephen King's "Cell" seem like a bad copy of a bad copy of a bad copy.

Now I understand that "Cell" was one of Stevie's dogs -- and that he still rules the realm of horror. But I was so impressed by "Alice" that I went out and read a bunch of other Dhar e-books, including "Zombiestan," which wasn't as good as "Alice" but was still a cut above most offerings in the realm of the walking dead.

So Dhar had to meet a pretty high standard in order to make me happy with the sequel to "Alice."

He does so in "Through the Killing Glass" -- which retains the same tremendous narrative energy as the original story. It's a cliché to say I couldn't put it down -- but I have to say it: I couldn't put it down.

Alice herself is an improved character in "Through the Killing Glass." Spoiler if you haven't read "Alice": she becomes a human/zombie amalgamation at the end of the first book and remains one throughout the second. Dhar demonstrates a keen sense of irony in making the half-zombie Alice more human and reflective than the tough but lovable little girl of "Alice." And it's not just a joke to do this: it underscores some of the central themes of the book.

Dhar also demonstrates a real understanding of the motives and methods behind totalitarianism -- and even how it can advance itself in the name of democracy. And he does this without interrupting the urgency of the narrative or becoming in the slightest degree tendentious.

To manage these literary goals in a zombie book is a trick that most writers wouldn't even attempt.

All in all, "Through the Killing Glass" is an impressive accomplishment and does a lot, in my view, to advance Mainak Dhar's already-admirable career as a storyteller.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great! January 3, 2013

This was a great follow up to Alice in Deadland. It was not quite as good as the first book, but sequels rarely are. In this book, Alice finds out that the consequences for taking down a powerful dictatorship can be both good and bad. Good in that you can help people and rebuild society to be stronger, but bad in that someone always wants to take you down and take your power. She also learns that people always need an authority figure to blame when things go wrong. If you liked the first book, you will like this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Curiouser and Curiouser
Since I enjoyed the first book, Alice in Deadland, much more than I expected, I picked up the second book out of curiosity. In some ways it was better than the first.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book
It stretches the imagination slightly but I would reccomend the series to anyone who likes si-fi and a lot of action. The story never slows down, hard to put the book down.

More About the Author

Mainak Dhar is a cubicle dweller by day and author by night. His first `published' work was a stapled collection of Maths solutions and poems (he figured nobody would pay for his poems alone) he sold to his classmates in Grade 7, and spent the proceeds on ice cream and comics. Mainak was a bestselling author in his native India with titles published by major houses like Penguin and Random House and with one of his novels (Herogiri) being made into a major motion picture. In early 2011, he began to use Amazon to reach international readers through his ebooks and became one of the leading independent authors in the world with more than 100,000 books sold in his first year. Mainak is one of the top selling horror authors on Amazon worldwide and in March 2013, became the #1 bestselling Horror author on Amazon, momentarily unseating Stephen King. He has thirteen books to his credit including the bestselling Alice in Deadland series. Learn more about him and contact him at mainakdhar.com.
