Book Description

March 2006
Ken Rand once again rides the plains and mountains of his beloved Wyoming, pen in hand, imagination bust out of the corral and galloping wild and free in the wind. Whoppers, like you'd hear told by campfire light at the end of a hard days ride, abound in Rand's parfleche: There's a zombie gal who wants her way despite death and misfortune, a sheriff made of tin you don't want to cross neither, and a magical mask that wears you. There's a new Lucky Nickel story about this guy who grows hair like nobody's business come the full moon. And there's this bridge out on the range that goes from here--to somewheres else.

Somewheres else.

Ain't that where folks want to go in their stories?

Sit. Read. Rand'll take you somewheres else.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Weirding of the West, May 6, 2006

This review is from: Through Wyoming Eyes (Paperback)
I'd encountered Ken Rand's work first in TALES OF THE LUCKY NICKLE and enjoyed it enough to be looking forward to this collection of short stories. Again, Rand entertains. "The Bridge to Nowhere" is probably the best and strongest story in the collection. One day a rancher wakes up and discoverers that a bridge has appeared on his land, a bridge leading nowhere, because there's a barrier that makes whatever crosses it disappear. Rand does a fine job of handling, on many levels, the ramifications of the story.

I also enjoyed the story of the aging gunfighter who is being displaced by technology, as a tin man is made sheriff. It's another great piece of work.

All the stories were a pleasure to read, and one can see Rand returning to themes he's used before with another fresh look.
