3.0 out of 5 stars Deserving of a more complete collection!, February 17, 2010
This review is from: Through the Years (Audio CD)
Emarcy in Europe released this Abbey Lincoln 3-CD box set in late 2009, and Hip-o Select has released it here in the US in early 2010.

It is more-or-less a career overview, including one track from her Liberty album, as well as a few tracks from her Riverside recordings and her work with Max Roach. Overall, it is somewhat disappointing, since Ms. Lincoln is certainly deserving of a box set, but this is (obviously) skewed to her Verve recordings, most of which are still readily available on individual discs. I find it unbelievable that this collection does not include "Afro Blue", since Abbey performed the first vocal version ever on her ABBEY IS BLUE LP of 1959 -- and it is somewhat of a signature tune for her.

While this box does include a few rarities, it really should have been a four disc collection so they could have included more of her hard-to-find work with Max Roach and one-off tracks recorded for other miscellaneous jazz projects:

Not In Love - with Cedar Walton [Muse 1980]

In A Sentimental Mood - with Cedar Walton [Muse 1980]

Castles - with Cedar Walton [Muse 1980]

For All We Know - with Geri Allen [from Drugstore Cowboy soundtrack / Novus 1989]

A Waltz for Grace - with Steve Williamson [Verve 1990]

Ten Cents A Dance - with Frank Morgan [Antilles 1990]

Wholly Earth - with Frank Morgan [Anitlles 1990]

Through The Years - with Bheki Mseleku [Verve 1994]

I Must Have That Man - Carnegie Salutes Jazz Masters [Verve 1994]

Christmas Cheer - Jazz For Joy A Verve Christmas Album [Verve 1996]

This Christmas - Jazz For Joy A Verve Christmas Album [Verve 1996]

Straight Ahead - with Mal Waldron [BMG 1997]

God Bless The Child - with Mal Waldron [BMG 1997]

All in all, I'd give this 3.5 stars, since the music it includes by Abbey Lincoln is stellar -- it just should have been so much more!
