Grove Miller is torn between two worlds. Nightmares of his mother's death trap him in the past as the love of Laurie Sanderson draws him to the future. Unknown to him, his father is the king of a verdant land that can only be reached through natural gateways, arboreal arches that cross between our modern world and an Inner Realm where Nature still reigns supreme. Grove must answer the questions about his past in order to face the future. He must win the love of his life and preserve his father's kingdom from treachery. A modern fantasy with elements of mystery and intrigue. Step into a wondrous land, step Through the Arch!

Both a modern drama and exciting fantasy book, this one is good for everyone. If you were to write a novel that aimed to be both of these areas, you would have a hard time reconciling the two elements: both modern implements and swords, T-shirts and cloaks, and a very different style of speaking. But Mr. Hammes has managed a way to reconcile these two worlds and spin a thrilling tale.

The characters were quite believable. Characters being the underpinning of fiction, however, I would have liked to see a bit more depth in some of the supporting characters. However, for the main characters, it was an intense thrill ride as we learned more about them and watched them interact.

A problem that seemed only to exist in the beginning, and which may have been intentional, was that the main character hadn't much more moral integrity than his main character early on. His friend, Todd, seems to be morally loose, and Grove, our main character, sort of follows him in his less-than-admirable behavior. However he seems to shake this later in the book so this serves to be only a small detail.

One of the best features in this book is an incredibly complicated and enthralling plot. I was on the edge of my seat for fifty pages straight. He pulled no punches on the intensity. Very horrible things happen to the main characters, and as a writer I can say that's hard to do. You really grow to care for the characters and whenever something happens in the plot you gasp with shock. And there are so many twists and with every one you're like "Surely this is it. There cannot be any more." But then guess what...there's another twist around the bend.

This is especially true in the second half of the book, which I read in one afternoon (I am a slow reader; this is rare). It was one after the other, intense with the action. Once you get past the character development at the beginning (which, trust me, has quick enough pace) it's all action. And because he developed these characters so nicely all the action feels deep and connected.

Well, the only major gripe I have about this book would be in the "writing style" category because I have no idea where else to put it. Technically, the work is awesome--the words are fresh and the descriptions were great. But the one thing I have against it: too much philosophical talk thrust into everyday conversations. It made it seem like all anyone was ever thinking about was the philosophy of this book, and it's a flavor I would have liked to be a bit more subtle and implied. I would have gotten the same message had the dialogue not been covered in philosophy.

Overall, about 4.5 stars. It was a thrilling read. I loved it, and I hope you do to.

With all due respect,

Dawson Vosburg

I really enjoyed this book. Alot of parts were able to be seen coming from a mile a way. Still not a bad book but I think it was meant for a younger reader.

He shares his home with two cats, Chuck and Snuggles, although Snuggles does not acknowledge Chuck's existence.
