Book Description

Jessie  Jones is living the life--except for the fact that she earns it by working the streets. She's been under pimp Spence's thumb for fourteen years, and she isn't looking to change it. That is, until undercover cop Gabe walks into her life and offers her something she's never had before: a love, a future, a home. But even if Jessie could walk away from Spence, there are darker forces of evil who want her to stay put, or worse, dead.

In this romantic suspense, author Heather Huffman delivers an adventure from the vibrant streets of St. Louis to the caves of the Ozarks as Jessie discovers whether she can love another, whether she can love herself, and whether any of it is enough.

Don't miss Heather Huffman's other books: Suddenly a Spy, Jailbird, Ring of Fire, Ties That Bind, Tumbleweed, and the newly-released Devil in Disguise!

Editorial Reviews

Review

"What I really liked about this book was the multiple layers to the plot - romance, intrigue, murder, tragedy, corruption, friendship and family. It kept me glued to the book and I finished it in a day." - Jay's Insight

"I greatly enjoyed this book which had just the right level of suspense where you really didn't know what was going to happen next, balanced with a few incidents that were easy to predict but that gave the reader a satisfying feeling of "rightness"." - The Right Words in the Right Order

"The characters are believable and undeniably human, while the story is filled with action and interesting plot twists. It reaches to the depths of readers' souls, and inspires them to try to make a difference within their own lives." - Author Jess Buike

From the Author

While Jessie's story is fiction, she was in a situation too many children face as they age out of the foster system. There are organizations that have been established to transition teens from the foster system into adulthood, but the need is still great.

One cause I believe very strongly in is the fight against modern-day slavery. Every day around the world people from all walks of life are enslaved, just like Jessie and the girls she encountered. Statistics show there are more people in slavery today than there were during the height of the transatlantic slave trade. Women and children are especially at risk.

The evil of human trafficking is not a theme in my novels, but merely a common element to many of them. The theme that permeates my writing is hope, which is the theme that permeates my life.   I believe if there's a breath left in our body, things can always get better.

This book is my small way of doing what I can to be a voice for the voiceless and to honor the strength and courage of women today.  I hope you enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, extremely thought provoking August 28, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This is an awesome book. It is a little slow to start out with but once you get it into it you can't put it down. The characters are really relatable, even though I have nothing in common with any of them. It reminded me a lot of the movie "Pretty Woman", except it actually has substance. It's more than just a good read, it brings up a bunch of issues in society and it makes you think.

If you are from St. Louis you can definitely feel a connection with the story. You can almost see the places Jessie sees, which is pretty hard to find in other books. The author used her home plate advantage to a T here and it gives the story a nice touch.

All in all, it's the most riveting tale I've read in a long time and I was sad to see it end. I'll give it 5 stars and 2 big thumbs up!

1.0 out of 5 stars Do What It Says - Throw Away September 19, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have never been moved to write an Amazon review before but I feel compelled to warn other readers to do exactly as this book instructs in the title and throw it away.

Despite this being a book about a street-walking hooker, the realities of this employment path are completely glossed over by the author. The protagonist turns barely a single trick in the course of the entire book, and that one night spent actually working is dismissed in a single line. As it would need to be, as the author clearly did no research on and has absolutely no understanding of prostitution.

There are many shades and guises of working girls in the real world, but the idea that a woman could be working the streets for fourteen years with a pro pimp and not be a junkie is so improbable that it moves this novel to the realms of SciFi. Only on Planet Improbability would there exist a yoga-loving street hooker in perfect physical health, her looks unravaged, her mind blissfully free from emotional trauma, and her body miraculously spared from STIs after more than a decade of nightly sex work. (Which, clearly, she must be, since she and her sudden love interest have unprotected sex without even discussing it, nary even a condom in sight.)

The premise of this novel in the Editorial Review is interesting, and life as a hooker - even the well-trod trope of the hooker with a heart of gold - has a lot of development potential for the romantic suspense genre. Unfortunately, is remains laughably rudimentary to the detriment of the entire book. Save your $0. Your time is worth much more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!! September 2, 2011
By Chloe
Format:Kindle Edition
The author lives in Missouri . . . I live in Missouri. I could picture the exact locations of the story and even got a chill when she mentioned one of the streets where I lived at one time. Yes, it is a very sad situation with the rehabs, foster homes, etc. 18 year olds in those 'throwaway' situations have a tough road to follow. I suppose a person doesn't really think about some of these situations. There are a lot of strip clubs on the East Side, and a lot of young women are trying to make a life for themselves the best way they can. Some, to a fatal end.

The book was intriguing and real.
