5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book About a Great Sport, December 2, 2005
This review is from: Throwback (Paperback)
It's great to see some new wrestling books coming out, because there aren't enough stories about our sport. "Throwback" contains some of the most realistic and gripping wrestling scenes ever written. Any wrestler or fan will instantly recognize and enjoy these. On top of that, there are some intriguing subplots that involve peer pressure, moral choices, and tolerance by high school students of others who are in different social circles. This is a fantastic new book about a great old sport.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even Has Hoobastank, December 12, 2005
This review is from: Throwback (Paperback)
What a great book. I started and finished it all in the same night. It even has some Hoobastank songs in it. I didn't know much about wrestling. Now I have a new respect for the wrestlers I know.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Wrestling Story, February 17, 2005
This review is from: Throwback (Paperback)
The wrestling details are the best I have ever read. Wrestlers, their girlfriends and parents will love this book.

As a former high school wrestling standout I can honestly say that this is one of the greatest books that I have ever read. I would love to see a second edition to further tell the story and see if Ben and Judy end up meeting again. Also, how did she find out who he really was? Once again, an absolutely amazing piece of work that I would love to hear more about.

Enjoyable read. Well paced, with a protagonist worth knowing. I didn't find the end particularly satisfying - almost as if the author reached an escape point and bailed out of the story. I hope there is a revision someday - the story certainly deserves a stronger conclusion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book! The ideal combination of wrestling and relationships, January 13, 2011

I couldn't put this book down. The writing style was like watching a movie. You have a wrestler that climbs to the top and at the end "gets the girl." 5 stars!

I'm now waiting for the sequel...

5.0 out of 5 stars "Throwback" is about more than just wrestling, February 8, 2009

This review is from: Throwback (Kindle Edition)
Amateur wrestler Ben Petrovic moves to a new school. Whether you like amateur wrestling or not (I've never watched it), this is an excellent novel about high school life. There's a major revelation after the sample that I didn't see coming (though it is mentioned in the plot description on this page, so avoid that if you don't want to know).

Author Dave Conifer is obviously well-versed in the art of amateur wrestling. The attention to detail present here could only come from a true insider and aficionado. However, he is just as well-versed when it comes to the lives of teenagers. As a result, his characters are realistic and easy to relate to.

Whether you're an amateur wrestling fan or not, "Throwback" is well worth the read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where's my Singlet and headgear!, July 28, 2011
This review is from: Throwback (Kindle Edition)
This was an amazing read. I absolutely enjoyed it. I wrestled for 14 years and could relate to all the wrestling moves and the agony of defeat and the thrill of the win. People should understand that wrestling is not just a physical sport but a mental sport as well. I remember wearing the rubber suit or plastics as most wrestlers call it and cutting weight and feeling drained when i hd my match. Not to mention all the distractions with girls, friends and family. I too remember looking up into the stands just hoping to see my mom or dad cheering me on. This book brought me back to my wresting days and i found myself in the story. Thanks Dave for writing this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly entertaining, July 19, 2011
This review is from: Throwback (Kindle Edition)
I am not a wrestling fan at all but I found the wrestling scenes in this very well written and surprisingly entertaining. I don't buy the main character's back story at all and was left wondering if this was the sequel to a different book, and I don't really buy the romantic subplot either, but the rest kept me interested enough to keep turning the pages.
